Subscription Update Obituary

Funeral Mass for Katherine Stauss, 93, of Baker, MT, will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2019 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Baker, with Father Xavier Arimboor celebrating.  Burial will follow at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Baker.

Visitation for Katherine will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 7, 2019 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary at 6:00 p.m.

Katherine passed away September 23, 2019 at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker.

Katherine Doll was born September 7, 1926 to Harry and Rose (Meuchel) Doll near New Salem, North Dakota. She grew up and attended school in New Salem. After a young age she began helping on the farm as well as being a nanny for other families. She later met Leo Stauss and they married on November 9, 1955 at St. Pius Catholic Church in New Salem.  The couple made their home in New Salem, and the family grew as Phyllis, Emery, Marcella, and Rosanne joined the family. They sold the farm in 1978 and moved to Baker, MT where they purchased The Lakeside Hotel. They operated the hotel until 1988 and retired. They continued to make their home in Baker. Following the passing of her husband Leo in 2001, Robert found his mother, Katherine and connected with the family.

Katherine enjoyed crocheting and making afghans for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time playing bingo and visiting the casino. Katherine was known for her delicious German cooking. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Katherine was a member of St. John Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son Robert (Pam) Kuster of Grand Forks, ND; daughters, Phyllis (Clinton) Mittlieder of Terry, MT, Marcella (Duane) Gappert of New Salem, ND, and Rosanne (Doug) Varner of Baker, MT; grandchildren, Brent (Virginia) Twiford, Todd Twiford, Troy (Wendy) Twiford, Jeremy (Heather) Gappert, Tanya (Jon) Anhorn, Jacob (Liz) Gappert, Levi (Jessica) Gappert, Chad (Jess Gappert), Dustin (Skyla) Varner, Scott (Jill) Kuster, and Ryan (Andrea) Kuster; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, Eugene Doll of Tucson, AZ; sister, Helen Stauss of Mandan, ND.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Rose; husband Leo; son, Emery; and brothers, Nick and Jacob Doll; a son-in-law, Gary Twiford.
