Celebration of Life service for Kornard “Burk” Burkle, 78, of Dickinson will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, June 27, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating. Burial will be 1:00 p.m., CDT, Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan, ND. Visitation for Kornard will be from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2011 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with a prayer service being held at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, June 27, 2011 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Chapel.
Kornard passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.
Kornard “Burk” Burkle was born December 11, 1932 in Fredonia, North Dakota, the son of Jon and Wilhelmina (Schminke) Burkle. He grew up in the Fredonia area, graduating high school in 1951 from Kulm, North Dakota. Burk completed Barber College in Fargo and worked in Linton where he met Irene Schneider. After enlisting in the United States Army, Burk married Irene on May 8, 1953 at Fort Riley, Kansas. He deployed to Korea, serving in the Korean War. Upon returning home, Burk joined the Air Force National Guard; retiring as Lieutenant Colonel with 30 years of service. Burk and Irene lived in various towns throughout North Dakota during his time with MaBell and AT&T. In 1965, moved to Dickinson serving as a Manager for AT&T until retirement. He began a second career, serving ten years as Stark County 911 Emergency Manager; creating the Burkle Rural Addressing System for 911. In his retirement years, Burk enjoyed fishing, RV trips, and his lake home. He especially loved his grandchildren, his Shelties, and cocktail time with his friends. Burk was also passionate about carpentry and gardening. He was committed to his church, and an active member of the Jaycees, Elks, Lions Club, Eagles, and Ham Radio Club.
Kornard is survived by his wife Irene; daughters, Karen (Jim) Popken of Woodbury, MN, Sharon “Shari” (Barry Hollander) Burkle of Gallatin Gateway, MT; three grandchildren, Rebecca Haapala, Jason Kuntz, Daniela Harmon; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
Burk was preceded in death by thirteen siblings.
