Larry Austin

Larry John Austin, 72, of Baker, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the Holy Rosary Health Center in Miles City following a battle with the West Nile virus. He was born July 4, 1931 in Belfield, ND, the son of John and Edith (Craig) Austin. He grew up and attended schools in the Marmarth area. Larry began work on the family ranch north of Marmarth as a young man. He loved ranching and helped out with the mail route, (the family had operated for many years), from Marmarth to Camp Crook. Larry married Carol Noftsker in Bowman on July 3, 1958. To their union four daughters were born: Wanda, Sandra, Pamela, and Nicole. They spent several years early on in their marriage ranching with Larry?s folks near Marmarth. They moved to Ronan, MT briefly before settling in Baker to raise their family. Larry began work in the oilfields and started ranching east of Baker also. He lived for the Western-style life of which included: horseback riding and attending Marmarth rodeos and local brandings. Often times he could be found reading a Western magazine, tuning into a Western classic movie on the television, or checking the forecasts on the Weather Channel. Larry also found great interest outside whether it be doing yard work or fencing. He also enjoyed family outings to Medicine Rocks and Medora. Larry truly loved his grandchildren. They were dear to him. His quiet spirit will be missed by his family and friends. Larry is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Cameron; and a nephew, Everett. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; four daughters: Wanda Austin, Sandra (Brian) Weiler, Pamela (Scott) Haugen, and Nicole (Daniel) Rohr, all of Baker; a brother, Doug (Sandy) Austin of Rapid City, SD; a sister, Betty (Tom) Holman of Marmarth; and thirteen beloved grandchildren.
