Larry Buck

A funeral Mass for Larry J. Buck, 60, Dickinson will be at 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2017 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, with Father Shannon Lucht celebrating. Burial will take place at a later date.


Visitation for Larry will be from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary and vigil service being held at 6:00 p.m.


Larry passed away Monday, May 8, 2017 at his home.


Daniel James Donegan was born on October 10, 1956 in Fargo, ND and was lovingly adopted by Gerald and Ann Buck in Crosby, ND on April 17, 1958 and was given the name, Lawrence John Buck.


Larry was raised in Crosby, graduating from high school in 1976. During that time he worked and was involved with the family business, Jerry’s Bakery. He worked for the City of Crosby as a lifeguard and managed the Crosby swimming pool. He belonged to the Divide County Ambulance and was helpful in the certification of EMT on the force. He also worked with both the Crosby Fire Department and Crosby Police Department. He worked at the Good Samaritan Center and St. Luke’s Hospital and managed the Crosby skating and curling rinks.


In 1977 Larry moved to Beach with the North Dakota Truck Reg and switched over to Golden Valley County Sheriff and was later promoted to Chief Deputy. He was also involved with Home on the Range for Boys in Sentinel Butte. He worked as North Dakota Brand Inspector and that’s where he met his wife-to-be, Kim Jandt. They were married in 1979 in Beach, ND. To this union their daughter Chantelle was born. They moved to Dickinson where he started out as a Field Deputy and was soon appointed to be the first, full-time Criminal Investigator for Stark County and then promoted to Sergeant. From 1985 to 1987 Larry left the sheriff’s office and purchased Mon-Dak Pawn and Sports Center. He later returned to the sheriff’s department and from 1990 to 2005 he served as the Chief Deputy in Stark County. During the time spent in Dickinson, Larry and Kim were foster parents and raised 22+ foster children.


Larry received citations for his work with Casey Family Program (foster care), Stark County Sheriff Department , Southwest Crime Conference, Civil Air Patrol (as a pilot), Grand Forks Police Department – Life saving, Office of Attorney General, Child Protection Services of SW North Dakota, US Department of Justice – FBI, and the Dickinson Police.


Larry attended many colleges and had specialized training in ECT-EMT, Homicide Investigation, ND Peace Officer training, arson investigation, family and community violence prevention, US Department of Justice, Forensic Pathology, Child Abuse & Exploitation, and psychological profiling.


He was a member of ND Peace Officers Association, SW Crime Conference, ND Stockmen’s Association, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, Elks, NRA, American Quarter Horse Association, German Hungarian Club, National and State Republican Party, Fraternal Order of Police, American Deputy Sheriff’s Association, St. Anthony’s Club, Hypnosis Institute USA and the FBI Leeda Association.


Larry enjoyed flying, boating, raising and riding horses, hunting, trapping, camping, riding motorcycle, singing and traveling all over the United States, Canada, Mexico.


Larry leaves behind his daughter, Chantelle (Michael) Kuntz; grandchildren, Maddison, Mavrick and Mia Ann Kuntz; sister, Mary Louise Geatz; ex-wife, Kim; foster children that had a special place in Larry’s life; Susan Burgard, Amy Edwards, Derrick Smith and their families.


He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Buck; mother, Ann Buck; biological mother, Dorothy M. Donegan; biological brother, David Donegan; close friend, Mark C. Phelps; and aunts and uncles.
