Larry passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND, with his loving family by his side. Lawrence Joseph Kostelecky was born May 27, 1941, in Dickinson, ND, to Isadore and Agnes Kostelecky. He grew up on the family farm two miles east of South Heart. After graduating from South Heart School in 1960, he attended Dickinson State College while farming with his dad and working at Farmer?s Union in Dickinson. Larry received his greetings from President Kennedy that he was being drafted into the Army on November 22, 1963, the day JFK was shot. He served his country from 1963 until being Honorably Discharged in 1965, which included a tour in Vietnam. Upon returning home, Larry began farming with his older brother, Art, until 1975, when he began farming and ranching on his own. On October 24, 1969, Larry married Karen Splichal at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in South Heart. To this union, two children were born, Mark and Kim. Larry and Karen built a new home just west of the original family farm, where he lived until his death. They operated a meat processing business during the winter months in the early 1980?s. In 1988, Larry began working for Steffes Manufacturing, where he worked for the next 20 years, before retiring in the fall of 2008. Throughout the years, Larry enjoyed hunting, playing co-ed softball, shooting pool, bowling, golfing and playing pinochle, belonging to a pinochle club for many years. Another enjoyment of his was listening and dancing to old-time music. Larry?s talent was the keen ability to visualize a project in his mind and then create it out of metal or wood. Larry was a member of St. Mary?s Catholic Church, where he was a rosary leader for 25 years and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Golden Eagle and served on the boards of Farmer?s Union, St. Mary?s Church, and most recently, the Pheasant Country Golf Course.
