Funeral Mass for Laudie J. Hanel, 92, of Dickinson, ND will be 10 a. m. , Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, New Hradec, ND with Father Shannon Lucht and Father Jeff Zwack concelebrating. Military rites will be presented by the Dickinson Honor guard with burial following at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, New Hradec. Visitation will be 12 p. m. to 9 p. m. , Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, ND with a rosary and vigil service at 7 p. m. Laudie passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009 at St. Luke?s Home in Dickinson, ND. Laudie J. Hanel was born August 4, 1916 in Dunn County, ND to Joseph and Anna (Stranik) Hanel. He grew up and attended Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School. He worked on the farm and neighboring farms until the age of 19, at which time he volunteered for the CCC. During his time in the CCC he worked on projects in or near: Sequoia National Park in CA, Walla Walla, WA, Medora, ND and New England, ND. At the start of World War II, Laudie enlisted in the army and served in the 164th infantry. He went through basic training in Camp Claiborne, CA, before being deployed through various locations such as Australia, Fiji Islands, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Bougainville. After his honorable discharge from the army, Laudie returned home to ND. On May 29, 1946, Laudie married Dorothy Kovash at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Hradec. The couple farmed in rural Dunn County until 1956. They moved to Billings, MT for a short time before returning to home to continue farming. Laudie and Dorothy lived on the farm until 1972, at which time they retired in New Hradec. In 1996 they moved to Dickinson and in 2002 became residents of St. Luke?s Home. Laudie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He loved farming and talked about it his final days. He also enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, playing cards and volunteering for the RSVP giving tours in the Machine Shed at the Dakota Dinosaur Museum in Dickinson. Laudie was known for his quiet gentleness and for his involvement in activities at St. Luke?s. He always spoke proudly of his military duty during World War II. Laudie is survived by his sons; Donald (Linda) Hanel, Dickinson, ND; Harvey (Meg) Hanel, Bismarck, ND; daughters; Ilene (Steve) Gill, Eugene, OR; Lorraine (Quain) Kudrna, South Heart, ND; 8 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Schneider, Everett, WA. He is preceded in death by both parents; his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorothy; brother, Frank; sisters, Rose Kadrmas, Emma Pavlicek and Margaret Tuhy.
