Funeral Mass for Lawrence “Larry” Forster, 80, New Salem, will be 10:30 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at St. Pius V Catholic Church, New Salem with Father Amalraj Roche celebrating.


Visitation for Larry will be from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. CDT, Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at St. Pius V Catholic Church with a Rosary and Prayer Service taking place at 7:30 p.m. CDT. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to service on Wednesday.


Larry passed away Thursday, May 05, 2011 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.


Lawrence “Larry” Forster was born March 4, 1931 at Richardton, ND, the son of Ferdinand and Emilia (Renner) Forster. He was raised and educated north of Richardton. In 1952, Larry enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, serving as a Corporal in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1954. On September 12, 1955, he married Sally Doll at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton, ND. Larry and Sally then moved to Seattle, WA and then back to the family farm north of Richardton. Together they farmed and ranched. In 1960, the family moved to New Salem where he farmed and raised registered Red Angus, milked cows, and raised their family. The couple also found time to travel in their motor home. Larry and Sally moved to town in 1991. He still helped out on the farm and spent his free time doing yard work and fishing at their lake home at Lake Tschida in Glen Ullin. Larry was a handyman of all trades and was always fixing something. He loved to go hunting and fishing. During his free time, Larry enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, and was an expert at making sausage. Larry enjoyed going to the county and state fairs and watching his children and grandchildren show their animals. He loved to be around and working with horses. Watching his grandchildren rodeo and participate in sports also brought him great joy. He especially loved teaching his grandkids how to play cards and shoot pool. Larry had a very good eye for cattle. He was a member of the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association and was awarded 4-H Alumni as well as being a FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer. Larry was a member and Past President of the North Dakota Red Angus Association. In 2001, Larry and Sally were awarded for their years of service and dedication to North Dakota Red Angus Association. They were the founding members. They were also members of the National Red Angus Association and were awarded National Pioneer Breeder of the Year in 2000, for recognition of their dedication in promoting the Red Angus breed. Larry was also a member of New Salem Weigh Station, New Salem American Legion Post #91, and past 3rd Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 4185.


Larry is survived by his lovely wife of 55 years, Sally; their six children, Melinda (Joe) Flath, Garrison, Cindy (Paul) Brandt, New Salem, Pam (Lyle) Boehm, Pelican Rapids, MN, Kenny Forster, Richardton, Wade (Paula) Forster, New Salem and Lori (Jim) Grey, Wilton; 17 grandchildren, Michael and Dusti Flath, Heidi (Eric) Brandt Reiter, Sheldon Brandt, Everette, Jeremy, Delvin, Hannah and Joshua Boehm, Zane, Seth, Kaitlyn and Libby Forster, MiKaela and Shane Forster and Adrian and Taylor Grey; one great-grandchild, Donald; three sisters, Sister Olivia, St. Joseph, MN, Norma (Allan) Chadwick, Delano, MN and Margaret (Gerald) Colbert, Fountain Hills, AZ; two brothers Floyd (Retta) Forster, Puyallup, WA and Bud (Judy) Forster, Cheyenne, WY; and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Emilia Forster; one son Daniel; three sisters, Agnes, Alice and Patricia; three brothers, Elmer, Ferd and Richard; and an infant sister and brother.
