Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence Harold Steffes, 81 of Plevna, MT will be 10:30 a. m. Thursday, February 1, 2007 at St. John?s Catholic Church in Baker, MT with the Rev. Father Thomas Tobin. Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot in St. Anthony?s Catholic Cemetery at Plevna, MT. Visitation will be 1:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. Wednesday, January 31, 2007 in the Chapel of Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p. m. Lawrence passed away Sunday, January 28, 2007 at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, MT. Lawrence Harold Steffes was born July 25, 1925, a son of Joseph M. and Rose (Doonan) Steffes on the family homestead southwest of Plevna, MT. Lawrence grew up on the family farm, and attended the Steffes-Sieler Country School. He later attended Plevna High School. On January 18, 1946, Lawrence enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the South Pacific Islands. After his Honorable Discharge on November 17, 1947, Lawrence returned to Plevna. Lawrence met the love of his life, Dorothy Thielen, and the two were married on September 29, 1949 at St. Anthony?s Catholic Church in Plevna, MT. Together they purchased the Steffes family farm where they raised their family. Over the years, Lawrence?s strong work ethics helped build up the Steffes family farm. Lawrence built and developed the Baker Lake City Shopping Center, which at the time included Reynolds, Anfinson?s and Harold Hanewald & Son?s. Throughout the years, he ventured into many successful business endeavors. Lawrence served on the Plevna Fire Department until the mid 1980?s, served eight years as a director for Mid-Rivers Telephone Cooperative Board and was a South Sandstone Irrigation Group Member. As his children and grandchildren grew Lawrence was actively involved in their 4-H and FFA projects. Lawrence was a member of St. Anthony?s Parish. Lawrence enjoyed attending auctions sales, and usually came home with something interesting! His real enjoyment in life was for his family, especially his grandchildren and being able to attend all of their activities. Lawrence is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy Steffes, Plevna, MT; three daughters, Janice Abraham, Spearfish, SD; Carol Bridgers, Belle Fourche, SD and Judy (Steve) Ehrich, Piedmont, SD; a son, Larry (Carmie) Steffes, Plevna, MT; a brother, Francis (Tilly) Steffes, Lewistown, ID; a sister Markie Gapp, Aberdeen, SD; his grandchildren, Derek Ehrich, Billings, MT; Chris Ehrich, VA; Chadd Steffes, Rapid City, SD; Stephanie Steffes, Plevna, MT; Whitney Bridgers, Belle Fourche, SD and Shawnna Steffes, Plevna, MT and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, Joseph and Rose, two stepmothers, Nanny Korth and Florence Henry, his siblings, Leo, Bernard, Marie, Gertrude, Raphael, Joe Jr. , Carol and William and two grandchildren, Meagan Eilek and Leo Bridgers preceded him in death.
