Layton Newton

Layton Newton, 83, Dickinson, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson, ND. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a. m. , Thursday, April 3, 2003, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with the Reverend Steven D. Tangen and the Reverend Pat Higgins officiating. Interment will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Price-Murphy Funeral Home Wednesday from 9 a. m. to 9 p. m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p. m. Visitation will continue on Thursday at the church one hour prior to the service. Layton Newton was born March 22, 1920, to Frank and Nora Ann (Hewson) Newton in Stark County. He was raised in the Hirschville area and attended rural school and Model High School in Dickinson. On May 16, 1944, he married Evelyn Sweetman of Manning, ND. They farmed with his father on the home place until they settled on their own farm where they still retreat to in the summer. In October of 1945, he began farming and ranching with quality dairy Holsteins and planted wheat, oats, corn, grain crops and hay for feed. He later began raising Hereford range cattle. They were sold and later qualified for show, their background sired from Myran Brademeyer, Eckroth, Roen and Neidhardt herds. One little bull; raised by Layton, was entered in the National Western Stock Show at Denver, Colorado, by Marvin Lutz. He was active in community affairs as well, bringing telephone and electricity to the area. He served on the Minnesota Valley Breeders Association, Iota School Board, Farmer?s Union Oil Co. , Great Plains Association, Dakota Resource Council member, and was a St. John?s Lutheran Church Trustee. His life ambition: success in quality farming, farmstead, family and many friends. Layton is survived by his wife Evelyn, Dickinson; daughter, Nancy (Paul) Elsey, Longmont, Colo. ; four grandchildren, Lynda (Stephen) Davis, Lois (David) Mogler, Brian (Kim) Rech, and Leah Rech; seven great-grandchildren, Kyle and Courtney Davis, Joshua and Jeremy Mogler, Breanna Rech, Jade McGee Rech and Cameron Neu, all of Colorado; sister, Belva Jansen, Dickinson; brother, Elmer (Anne) Newton, Dickinson; one nephew, Howard (Jarri) Newton and family, Dickinson; three nieces, Gail Beaudoin and family, Ginger Huschka and family and Beverly Jundt and family, all of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by: his parents; a great-grandson, Dalton Davis and a brother-in-law, Wilbur ?Bill? Jansen. Memorials are preferred to: St. John Lutheran Trust Fund, Dickinson, the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame, Medora or donor?s choice.
