Funeral service for Leander Johnson, 86, of Almont, will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Bethel Assembly of God Church, Glen Ullin with Pastor Albert Lautenschlager officiating. Burial will follow in the Glen Ullin Cemetery.
Visitation for Leander will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. CST, Monday, February 18, 2013 at Spangelo-Stevenson Funeral Home, Glen Ullin.
Leander Johnson passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND.
Leander G. Johnson was born March 25, 1926 in New Salem, ND, the son of Andrew and Valborg (Johnson) Johnson. He grew up and attended country school near New Salem, graduating from New Salem High School in 1944. After graduation, Leander was drafted into the United States Army and stationed in Japan. He returned home after being honorably discharged in 1948. Leander then moved to Wahpeton where he learned the electrical trade and became a master electrician. He began his career with Mar-Grand-Sioux Electrical Company and later moved to Edgely, ND where he worked for James Valley Co-Op for 18 years. Later, he became a self-employed Master Electrician in Garrison and New Salem. He retired to the ranch near Almont. Leander was a very positive person and loved being an electrician. In his early years, he played basketball as well as baseball with the Johnson Team. He loved being outdoors, hunting game birds, picking juneberries, fishing, and feeding his dogs and cats. Leander was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in various sports. He also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.
Leander is survived by his wife, LaVerne of Almont; sons, Arland (Mary) of Turtle Lake, Ardale of Almont, and Lee of Bismarck; daughter, Aleta Johnson of Plymoth, WA; grandchildren, Heidi (Jonah) Lundeen, and Eric (Becky) Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Jayden, Nathaniel, Landan and Logan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Valborg; brothers, Milton, Norman, Willard, and Palmer; and sisters, Vendora Johnson and Adaline Gibson.
