Lee passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in Dickinson.

Lee John Leiss was born August 23, 1942 in Spokane, WA, the son of John M. and Lillian L. (Kadrmas) Leiss. At an early age, he moved with his family to Gladstone, where he grew up, attended country school, Gladstone Elementary and graduated from Gladstone High School in 1960. One of Lee’s main passions in life was radio. He devoted his time, energy and attention to all aspects of the radio industry. During his career, he worked as a disc jockey, sportscaster, copywriter, and radio sales person. He approached each of these positions with enthusiasm, persistence, and a positive attitude. Right out of high school, he attended a three-month broadcasting training program at KBOM in Bismarck-Mandan. After this training in the fall of 1960, he began working at KDIX and attending classes at Dickinson State College. On Feb. 5th, 1963, Lee married Darlene Heiser at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. To this union, three children were born: Kent, Shawn and Honey. In 1964, the couple moved to Baker, MT where Lee helped put KFLN radio on the air. In 1966, the family moved to Grand Forks where Lee worked as a disc jockey and sportscaster; he particularly enjoyed broadcasting UND Sioux Hockey games. Over the next 10 years, Lee worked in various radio stations throughout Montana. The family returned to Dickinson in order for Lee to pursue his passion for radio. Lee has been a major player in the Dickinson radio industry; in addition to working at KDIX in the early sixties and seventies, he assisted with the launching of KLTC radio in the mid-seventies. He and his wife became owners of KDIX in 1992 and have been proudly operating it since that time. As an owner of KDIX, Lee developed his on-air personality of “Jefferson Clark.” Lee enjoyed reading, watching sports, traveling, broadcasting summer baseball games and bragging about his kids and grandkids.

Lee is survived by his wife, Darlene; sons, Kent of Coeur d’Alene, ID; Shawn (Laura) of Dickinson, and daughter, Honey (John) Sayler of Coeur d’Alene, ID; five grandchildren, Meleah, Foster, Macy, Lilli, and Jackson; and brothers, Alan (Lynn) of Minneapolis, and Bruce (Renae) of Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Lillian L. Leiss; brothers, Johnny and Dwight; and sister, Lois Leiss.
