Mass of Christian Burial for Leo Kessel, 88, of Lisbon, formerly of Belfield, is Tuesday, January 28, 2003, 10:00 a. m. at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church with Father Shannon Lucht, celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Bernard?s Cemetery. William C. Blair Post #144, of Belfield, will provide military rites. Visitation is Monday from 9:00 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel and 5:30 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. at St. Bernard?s Catholic Church, Belfield with a rosary at 7:30 p. m. followed by a vigil service. Leo passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center of Fargo, North Dakota. Leo, son of Frank and Clara (Martin) Kessel was born November 22, 1914, in Billings County, ND. He grew up and attended school in Billings County and later moved into Belfield. Leo worked with CCC before enlisting into the US Army in 1942, where he served at Ft. Sill, OK. He was honorably discharged in 1943, then moved back to North Dakota and worked for various ranchers and farmers. He managed the Phillip 66 station in Belfield for several years. Leo also worked with his brothers at Kessel Builders & Supply and more recently the Teddy Roosevelt Foundation as a carpenter. Leo loved to play pinochle at the soldiers home. However, his great enjoyment came in the time shared with his family especially his grandchildren. Leo is survived by his son, Kenneth (Pamela) Kessel of Houston, TX; two grandchildren, Nichole and Justin Kessel; two brothers, Nick (Goldie) Kessel of Belfield, Alois (Dorothy) Kessel of Dickinson; five sisters, Agnes Halstead of Dickinson, Angeline (Harry) Romine, Agatha (Floyd) Higgins, Florence Boelow all of Portland, OR, Mary Olinger of Richardton along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
