Funeral Mass for Leo “Curly” Schafer, 83, of Dickinson, ND will be 9:00 a.m., Thursday, June 14, 2012 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church Dickinson, ND with Father Schumacher celebrating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND.


Visitation for Leo will be from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Stevenson Funeral Home, with a rosary and vigil service at 5:30 p.m.


Leo passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012 at St. Benedict’s Health Center.


Leo J. Schafer was born July 29, 1928 in Bluegrass, east of Glen Ullin, ND to Mathew and Mary (Lang) Schafer. He attended Sacred Heart School in Glen Ullin and graduated from Glen Ullin High School. Leo then attended two semesters of college for business. He entered the Army on December 7, 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1952. He remained on Active Status in the Reserves for many years. On January 5, 1953, Curly and Lena Reinbold were united in marriage at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hebron, ND. Together, they have made Dickinson their home. Curly began a long and fulfilling career in the grocery business starting with King’s Super Value. He loved to hunt deer and pheasant, fish, gardening and especially growing roses. Curly served as a Cub Scout Leader and a Mass Server in his younger years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.


He is survived by wife, Lena, Dickinson, ND; sons, Kent (Punk) Schafer and Kyle (RaeLynn) Schafer, Dickinson, ND; three grandchildren, Justin (Kayla Holzor) Schafer, Rapid City, SD, Sara (Chris) Hornick, Rapid City, SD, and Chris (Kristy Repine) Dietz, Dickinson; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene (Leo) Erhart, Belle Fourche, SD, Lillian (Frank) Dinius, Phoenix, AZ, Joan (Ken) Meier Northside, MN, Patty (Gordon) Kroh and Polly Fitterer, Glen Ullin, ND.


Leo is preceded in death by both parents; sons, Kurt and Kelly; brothers, John, Larry and Duane Schafer; and sisters, Arlene Schmautz, Claudia Kobilansky, and Violet Karch.
