Leon J. Hellickson, 94, Dickinson, formerly of the Medora area, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at St. Luke?s Home, Dickinson. Interment will be 9:30 a. m. , Friday, April 1, 2005 in the Medora Cemetery, Medora. Memorial services will follow at 11 a. m. at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Visitation will be held at Price-Murphy Funeral Home Thursday from 3 p. m. to 4 p. m. , continuing at 6 p. m. until 7 p. m. Leon Hellickson was born November 28, 1910 at Medora to John Martin Hellickson and Addie Plumley Hellickson. He attended elementary school at the Hellickson school of rural Medora and high school at the Demores school in Medora. He was active in athletics during high school. Leon spent his entire life ranching in the Medora area. From the time he was born, until 1938, Leon lived and ranched on Davis Creek, about seven miles south of Medora. In 1922, when his father died, he remained on that ranch with his mother and brothers. In 1938, Leon, his mother and step-father, sold their ranch on Davis Creek and purchased the Willis King Ranch located 3 ? miles south of Medora. Leon married Gwendolen Fisher on June 27, 1940 in Dickinson. They purchased full ownership of the ranch in 1944. Leon and Gwen operated his ranch until 1992 when he retired and they moved to Dickinson. In addition to ranching, Leon delivered mail both north and south of Medora for eight years. He was a member of the Medora Grazing Association and a former member of the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge of Belfield, and the United Congregational Church of Medora. He is survived by: three sons, Dayton A. (Buck) Hellickson, Holbrook, AZ, Mylo A. (Lillian) Hellickson, Brookings, SD, Martin L. (Beverley) Hellickson, Corvallis, OR; three grandchildren, Amy Hellickson (James) Gunsalus, Trenton, NJ, Benjamin B. Hellickson, Boston, MA and Will J. Hellickson, Tucson, AZ; one brother, Calvin Hellickson, Royalton, MN; one half-brother, Allen Anderson, Dickinson, ND. He was preceded in death by: his wife, Gwendolen on January 9, 2001; his parents, John Martin and Addie; his step-father, A. J. Anderson; four brothers, Ronald, Everett, Richard and Dale; one daughter-in-law, Michelle Hellickson; two grandsons, Bruce and Eric Hellickson.
