A Memorial Service for Leon Newell, 77, of Baker, MT will be 10:00 a. m. on Monday, October 10, 2011, at American Lutheran Church in Baker with Pastor Reba Kolasch officiating. Inurnment will follow in Bonnievale Cemetery at Baker. Visitation will be 3:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. on Sunday, October 9th, with the Family Receiving Friends from 3:00 p. m. to 5:00 p. m. at Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker. Leon passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker after a short battle with cancer. Leon Bennett Newell was born Sept. 5, 1934, in Baker the son of Elmer and Alice (Myhre) Newell. He spent his entire life in Baker, all within the same three block area. He attended school in Baker and graduated from Baker High School in 1953. After high school he went to work for Lee Moline, transporting gasoline to area farmers and ranchers. June 1, 1955, he started work for Montana-Dakota Utilities. He retired March 31, 1997, after 42 years of employment. Leon married Susan Stickney June 3, 1967 in the Presbyterian Church in Miles City. Together they enjoyed camping, fishing and most of all spending time with family. Leon also liked to golf and go for Sunday drives with his kids. After retirement, Leon discovered a rare talent and passion for scroll saw work. He made many creative and intricate works of art which he gave open heartedly to his family. Leon was a member of the American Lutheran Church ? where he served as a council member for 16 years, Baker Volunteer Fire Department (member for 29 years and chief for 12 ?), Baker Jaycees, secretary of the Baker Chamber of Commerce, Lakeview Country Club, Cub Scout leader, helped with Boy Scout merit badges and served his community in many other volunteer efforts. He also had a beautiful voice and sang for many funerals and weddings throughout his life. He is survived by his wife Susan of Baker; three sons: Kevin and his wife Debbie, Dale and his wife Kathy, all of Baker, and Kyle and his wife Lynda of Billings; two daughters: Sharee Newell of Baker and Kamie (Jeff) Garner of Bozeman; eight grandchildren: Wayne, Jennifer, Joe, Josh, Dallas, Kelby, Brynn and Marc; four great-grandchildren: Adisyn, Trevin, Reese and Kevin Casey; two brothers: Calvin and Lynda Newell of Kalispell, Russ and Jerrie Newell of Baker; two sisters: Carren and Bob Coldwell of Troy and Juline and Richard Kosmicki of Billings; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Steve and Jan Stickney of Ismay; and numerous nieces and nephews. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sons, Lon and Quentin; and one infant brother.
