Leonard "Shmoo" Heid

A Celebration of Life for Leonard “Shmoo” Heid, 88, of New Salem will be held at 10:30 a.m. CT., Saturday, November 16, 2024 at Peace Church in New Salem. Burial will take place at a late date at Friendship Cemetery in Morton Co.

A gathering will be held an hour prior to the service at the church. 

Leonard passed away Monday, October 28, 2024 at his home in New Salem.

Leonard Raymond Alvin Heid was born January 8, 1936 to Carl and Ida (Wolf) Heid on the family farm in rural New Salem. Leonard graduated from New Salem High school in 1953. After graduation he began working on the farm with his uncle until he was old enough to work on the railroad. Leonard began working as a Clerk for what was then the Northern Pacific Railroad. Leonard met Alma Creviston after driving her home from a basketball game. He knew right away he was going to marry her, and that he did. Leonard and Alma married on November 26, 1957 at Peace Church in New Salem. Leonard’s job took the couple to different towns in his 43 years of employment. The moved to Beach for four years, then Dickinson where he retired in 1997. Leonard and Alma moved to New Salem in 1999 after the completion of the house they had been building. 

Leonard spent countless hours in his garden, tending to his plants and vegetables, and his winter months were dedicated to growing hundreds of little cups filled with soil and seeds of different flowers and vegetables. Leonard was known to share these starters with his friends and family.

He also enjoyed bowling, hunting, camping and fishing and playing cards. His house was was filled with his collection of ducks and mounts a reflection of his love for nature. Woodworking was another one of Leonard’s passions, and he would often craft lawn ornaments, birdhouses, benches, and other miscellaneous items during the winter months.

Leonard and Alma embarked on many different trips. They traveled to Mexico and different State parks and even enjoyed an Alaskan cruise. While Leonard was a homebody at heart and not always eager to leave, he always found joy in these adventures. 

Leonard is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alma of New Salem; sister-in-law, Irene Heid; brothers-in-law, Tom (Judy) and Tim (Corrine) Creviston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ida Heid; brothers, Carl (Lavern), Elmer (Donna), Earnest (Marian), Robert Heid; and sister, Hazel (Leo D.) Bauer.
