A Liturgy of the Word service for Lloyd Kessel, 65, of Dickinson, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home. Burial will take place at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield.
Visitation for Lloyd will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, December 29, 2017 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary service being held at 7:00 p.m.
Lloyd entered rest on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at CHI St. Alexius Health – Bismarck.
Lloyd was born October 24, 1952 to Wendell and Tomasita (Martinez) Kessel in Dickinson. Lloyd grew up in Belfield attending grade school and graduating from Belfield High School. He completed his education at Mary College (University of Mary) in Bismarck, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Lloyd was the valedictorian of his class and went on to earn his Masters. After his schooling, he was employed as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson. He was also employed at Richardton Medical Center as supervisory nurse. He continued his nursing career as a nurse for the government of Saudi Arabia. He received recommendations from the King of Saudi Arabia. Lloyd started traveling the Middle East where he had met Mother Theresa, climbed the pyramids of Giza, climbed the Himalayans, performed the Walk of Christ in Jerusalem, (the Via Dolorosa and Stations of the Cross), swam in the Red Sea, walked The Great Wall of China, trekked through the Sahara Desert, along with many other expeditions. Some of his favorite places traveled to have been Africa, India, Jordan, Thailand, Jerusalem, Syria, Lebanon, China, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and Asia. Upon returning from his travels, he got married in 1988 and had two beautiful children, Taylor and Danielle. He continued pursing his nursing career, holding positions with St. Joseph’s Hospital, Southwest Correctional Center and traveling nurse organizations, as well as a professor at the college. Lloyd enjoyed spending time with his children, family and friends, writing poems (receiving numerous awards for his poetry), storytelling, and time with his church community.
Lloyd is survived by his son, Taylor Kessel of Dickinson; daughter, Danielle Kessel of Palm Desert, CA; sister, Wanda Kilzer of Mesa, AZ, Yvette (Greg) Bavendick of Mandan; nephews, Duane Kilzer, Derrick (Amanda) Hecker, Nathan Hecker and Mathew Hecker; niece, Angela Kilzer; great-nephews, Hunter and Ryder Hecker, and Dylan Kilzer; great-niece, Hailie Hecker; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother, Duane.
