Lois passed away Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Dahl Memorial Health Center in Ekalaka with her loving children at her side.
Lois Marie was born February 2, 1922, the daughter of Severin and Hilda (Bengston) Wolden in Union County, SD. It was a cold icy day and her doctor had to chain up his Model T to get there. Lois joined her sister, Gladys, and brother, Jewel. She was a baptized and confirmed member of the Lutheran Church. At age 8, Lois moved with her family to Gustave, SD where she attended Gustave and Dryfield grade schools. She then attended high school in Belle Fourche, graduating in 1940. Following graduation, she spent a year at home with her parents before attending the National School of Business in Rapid City, SD. She was employed at the Adams Co. Grocery Store in Belle Fourche. On December 23, 1942, Lois and Ole Johnson were married in Belle Fourche, where they lived until the fall of 1944, and then they moved to the George Thomas place at Sheep Mountain. It is here where they raised their five children, Sharon, Linda, Mark, Pat and Lynette. The family were members of the Little Missouri Lutheran Church. Lois spent most of her life at home doing chores, raising a garden and canning the produce, sewing, crocheting or embroidering. She especially loved working alongside Ole throughout their lives on the ranch. Faith, family and ‘home on the ranch’ were her life. The ranch is still in the family. Lois’ words of wisdom to her kids were “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” She will be remembered also for her reminding words to her family that they were always so blessed. Lois became a resident of Dahl Memorial Nursing Home in April 2015.
Lois is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Brice) Barrere of Ekalaka, Linda (Don) Harpster of Ekalaka, Pat (Greg) Waldie of Miles City, Lynette (Dave) Donahey of Sheep Mountain; son, Mark (Rhonda) Johnson of Belle Fourche; sister-in-law, Elsie Wolden; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ole Johnson (3-16-1993); brother, Jewel Wolden; sister, Gladys Bonefield; granddaughter-in-law, Bobbi Johnson; brothers-in-law, Otto Johnson and Bill Bonefield; and sister-in-law, Inez Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Little Missouri Lutheran Church, Camp Crook Volunteer Fire Department, or Dahl Memorial Health Care.
