Lois Florence Stewart was born on December 27, 1928 in Duluth, MN a daughter to George and Mabel (Thielbar) Austin. Lois was raised on a dairy farm outside of Richville, MN and attended schools in Perham, MN. When Lois was 13, she attended a family gathering in Minnesota and met a young man from Ekalaka, MT by the name of Richard Stewart. During her senior year of high school, Dick was home on leave from the military. Dick traveled back to Minnesota to Lois and the young couple was married on January 11, 1946 in Detroit Lakes, MN. Lois continued to live in Richville until Dick was discharged from the service. Dick moved Lois from Minnesota to his home town of Ekalaka, MT, where the two made their home. Lois and Dick were blessed with three children; Austin George, Paula Jean and Marian Kay. Lois spent her early years raising her three children. As her children grew older, Lois went into the homes of three Ekalaka families to help tend to the household duties. Lois went to work at the Dahl Memorial Hospital in Ekalaka, where she worked as a nurse?s aid. Eventually she became the head of housekeeping. Dick passed away on January 12, 1989, one day after their 43rd wedding anniversary. Lois continued to live at her home in Ekalaka until September of 2001 when she moved into the Dahl Memorial Health Care Nursing Home. Lois loved to be around children. She enjoyed helping with the Vacation Bible School in the summer, Sunday school during the school year and helping with the Christmas programs at church. She assisted with the activities at the nursing home and was a helping hand at fair time with the parade floats. Lois loved to play the guitar and piano; both of which she was self-taught. Lois was very proud of her country and took pride in serving and being a member of the Ekalaka VFW Auxiliary and the Ekalaka American Legion Auxiliary. Lois has been a life member of the VFW since July 1956, and has served as an officer in the local and district offices of VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed being involved in the community and was proud of the Ekalaka community. Lois liked making crafts and sewing, but her real love was for her family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lois is survived by her two daughters, Paula Jean (Jim) Harkins, Billings, MT and Marian Kay (Doug) Watt, Brusett, MT; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, George and Mabel Austin, her step-father, Bob Olson, her loving husband, Dick Stewart, her son, Austin George Stewart, her sister, Margie Heidtke, her brother, Harry Austin, a great-grandson, Brett Wooster and a great-grandson, Bradley James Erhart.
