Lorina (Rena) Bader, the tenth and youngest child of Christian J and Sophia (Trautman) Bader was born on March 18, 1924 on the family farm south of New Leipzig, ND. She completed her 8th grade education at a rural school. She met the love of her life, John Schantz, at a dance in New Leipzig and they were married April 6, 1942 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Glen Ullin, ND. They made their first home on the Schantz farm Southwest of Glen Ullin. In 1947 they purchased a farm south east of Hebron. Rena farmed alongside her husband while raising their three children. When the boys were old enough to help on the farm, she became a nurse’s aide at the new nursing home in Glen Ullin and also worked at the Sunset Inn, New Salem. John died in 1982. Rena then moved to Bismarck where she volunteered at St. A’s hospital and also at a thrift store. In 2005 she came back to Glen Ullin and lived in the Marian Manor Estates until entering the healthcare center two years ago. Rena was a hard working take charge woman. No task scared her. She had a “green thumb ” with her house plants, vegetable, and flower gardens; was an excellent baker, cook and even ran her own restaurant for a short time in Glen Ullin. The family favorite was her turkey stuffing! She also loved to dress up and go dancing! In her retirement years she was an avid reader, reading as many as 15 books a month and doing countless jig saw puzzles, some of which she had framed. Those left to mourn are her sons, Chester (Bonnie) Schantz and Miles (Sally) Schantz, Hebron, and her daughter Jeanie (Ken) Schaffer, Bismarck, ND. Her brother, Walter (Wynn) Bader, Tacoma,WA, her sister-in-law, Anna Schantz, Glen Ullin, her eight grandchildren Jordan (Cheri) Schantz, Michael (Lauren) Schantz, Amanda (Nathan) Dvorak, John Schantz, Ruby Ackerson, Charles (Sandra) Schantz, Brad (Jolene) Schaffer and Scott (Lisa) Schaffer. Four step-grandchildren Stuart, Cody, Cole and Danielle, her ten great grandchildren; Ethan, Lizabeth, Ciri, Calvin, Logan, Jacob, Chloe, Bryson, Chase, Blake and one expected in November and Penalton, great step-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 40 years, three brothers, Adolf, Ervin and Herbert, three sisters, Ada Roseberry, Emma Friez and Sophia Hirning and two infant siblings. She will be interred at Sacred Heart Cemetery beside her “Johnny”. Thank You to Marian Manor Healthcare Center for the excellent care of our Mother!!
