Lorraine passed away February 27, 2023 surrounded by family at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.
Lorraine Maria Loh was born December 10, 1928 to Frank and Marion (Kilzer) Gion. Life was not easy for the four Gion children due to the death of their mother when Lorraine was only seven years old. Lorraine attended grade school at Cherry Butte School. Her freshman year, she attended St. Mary’s High School in New England, and the last three years were spent at St. Mary’s High School in Richardton, where she graduated in 1946.
Lorraine soon caught the eye of a young man working for her dad, Joe Loh. Lorraine married Joe on June 28, 1948 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in rural Regent. They lived in the Regent area from 1948 to 1955, moving to the Lefor area in 1955. In 1956 they moved again, fourteen miles west of Manning. After Joe’s death on March 8, 2011, she moved to Dickinson and resided with her son, Jeff. In August of 2022, Lorraine became a resident of St. Luke’s nursing home in Dickinson.
Lorraine’s Catholic faith was always very important to her. Throughout the years she was a member of St. Henry’s in Regent, St. Elizabeth’s in Lefor, and St. Edward’s of Fayette, where she taught Catechism and served as an officer of the Christian Mothers Sodality until it closed in 1986. She then attended St. Peter’s of Grassy Butte, and finally, Queen of Peace in Dickinson.
Lorraine was active in the North Dakota Cattlewomen on a district and state level for many years. She also served as the election inspector for the Fayette Precinct from 1978 to its closing in 1986. Lorraine was a wonderful homemaker with a spotlessly clean house, huge loaves of home-baked bread, wonderful roast beef meals, and always delicious cookies and desserts. Her garden was always productive, and she had a magic touch with geraniums. But above all, her pride and joy were her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Diane Johannesen of Sundance, WY; sons, Jeff Loh of Dickinson, Tim (Vickie) Loh of Manning; four grandchildren, Lorri (Kevin) Capistran, Loren (Bernadette) Loh, Carl (Jena) Johannesen, Paul (Jessica) Johannesen; twelve great-grandchildren, Maria Loh, John Loh, Gianna Loh, Rebecca Loh, Samantha Loh, Ben Capistran, Ella Capistran, Beth Capistran, Sawyer Johannesen, Watson Johannesen, Wells Johannesen, and Amelia Johannesen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe (2011); parents, Frank and Marian Gion; infant daughter, Margaret; her siblings and their spouses, Herman (Kathleen) Gion, Jim (Marie) Gion, Delores (Don) Loh; and Joe’s siblings and their spouses, Margaret (Norris) Cone and Vera (Ed) Gion.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Henry's Cemetery in Regent.
