Louise passed away on August 6, 2017 at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem, surrounded by her loved ones.

Louise Loretta Emma Weiss was born January 1, 1920 on the family farm 12 miles south of New Salem, the 12th of 13 children born to William and Caroline (Keller) Weiss. When she entered the first grade at her rural school, she knew very little English because German was the language used at home. Louise was baptized and confirmed in Bethel Church located near the family farm. After completing the eighth grade, Louise worked at home and also as a hired girl for the area farm families. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Bert Norton, at a dance at Big Heart Hall. Bert spotted her and the rest was history

.

Louise and Bert were united in marriage on Louise’s 22nd birthday, January 1, 1942, which was a bitter cold -38 degrees. They made their home on the family farm where throughout their married life, they worked as a team. The couple was blessed with two children, Pat and Keith. In 1974, Louise and Bert built their retirement home in New Salem. Their home remained a center gathering place for their family to come together to celebrate birthdays and holidays. After Bert’s death in 2000, Louise continued to enjoy living in her home. She remained sharp and remembered her families’ birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays; making sure to send cards to help them celebrate. In 2013, Louise moved to Elm Crest Manor.

Louise was a very creative person and spent much time crocheting, and making jewelry jars and pictures. She was known to have a green thumb and spent many hours in her flower garden. Louise was proud of winning Yard of the Month, which was well deserved with how much she loved being outside tending to her lawn and flowers. Louise loved to entertain, playing a challenging game of cards and learned to play Pinochle at the age of 95. She spent many hours cooking; making her family their favorite recipes which included egg gravy, Christmas cookies and her famous buns. Throughout the years, she taught her family how to make these recipes which they lovingly make today. Louise’s family and faith in God were of the utmost importance to her. She was a very gracious woman with a generous heart and shared whatever she created with her loved ones.

Louise was a member of Peace Church, Peace Church Women’s Guild, Homemakers Club and the Senior Citizen Center.

Grateful to have shared her life are her children, Patricia (Norm) Toman of Ft. Collins, CO, and Keith, (Diane) Norton of New Salem; four grandchildren, Becky (John) Toman of Ft. Collins, CO, Bret (Tina) Toman of Windsor, CO, Tara (Joe) Sanchez of Grapevine, TX, and Julie (Jeff) Vyska of Bismarck; grandson-in-law, Darcy Becker of New Salem; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Loretta Daniels of St. Louis, MO; sisters-in-law, Gen Weiss, Ruby Norton and Nina Filibeck along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Caroline Weiss; husband, Bert Norton; two granddaughters, Karen Becker and Wendy Norton; brothers, William, Art, Harold and Herman Weiss; sisters, Maggie Vollrath, Emma Weiss, Ella Purrfurst, Theresa Schwartz, Clara Bahr, and Eileen Gaebe.

The family is so grateful to the dedicated staff and caregivers at Elm Crest Manor who lovingly cared for Mom these past 4 ½ years.
