Lowell Austin

Lowell Austin, 78, Dickinson, died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center, Dickinson. Funeral services will be 10 a. m. , Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Pastor Pat Higgins officiating. Interment will be in Rainy Butte Lutheran Cemetery, rural New England. Visitation will be Noon to 9 p. m. , Wednesday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, continuing on Thursday from 8 a. m. to 10 a. m. Lowell Austin was born at home in Unique Township, Slope County, ND, on October 3, 1927 to Leslie and Edna (Parker) Austin. He was the seventh son in a string of 10 boys and one little ?sis?. They raised sheep and later cattle on the family ranch. Lowell attended rural schools and New England School through the 8th grade. Lowell worked on the ranch herding sheep. He met Lucille Flyberg at a dance in Amidon in 1946. They were married in Miles City, MT on March 3, 1949. The pair resided at the ranch until 1959. Their oldest children, Jeanie and Jerry were born during the days at the ranch. In 1959, they moved to Peaceful Valley Township. They raised cattle and Lowell worked as a farm hand. Their children, Gae and Luanne were born while they lived in Peaceful Valley. Lowell retired in 1989 after a lifetime of ranching. The couple moved to Dickinson at that time and resided there until his passing. He enjoyed woodworking, vegetable gardening, picnics, playing baseball and horseshoes, hunting, bird watching, and reading the Guidepost and Readers Digest magazines. He also liked to attend rodeos at Home on the Range, and could be found helping to clean up the fairgrounds for the Slope County Fair, and would help with community projects and brandings. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Lowell is survived by: his wife, Lucille, Dickinson; one son, Jerry (Bev) Austin, Savage, MN; two daughters, Gae (Steve) Bjorklund, Bozeman, MT, and Luanne Austin (Gregg DeBoever) Boulder, CO; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis (Sharon) Austin, Gillette, WY, Bill (Betty) Austin, Mesquite, NV; one sister, Janice Speiser, Billings, MT; three sisters-in-law, Helen Austin, Lemmon, SD, Beverly Austin, Billlings, MT, and Zola Austin, Billings, MT. Lowell Austin was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jeanie Nelson; one son-in-law, Larry Nelson; one great-granddaughter, Brooke LaRae Hurley; seven brothers, Leslie, Dudley, James (Mable), Max, Stanley, Winfield, and Carol. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Anne Carlsen Center for Children, 701 3rd St. NW, Jamestown, ND 58401.
