Mass of Christian burial for Lowell P. Schiltz, 93 of Dickinson is 10:00 a. m. , Monday, May 30, 2005, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson, with Father Jim Braaten celebrating. Interment will follow in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, May 29, 2005 from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. with a Rosary and Vigil at 7:00 p. m. at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel. Visitation will continue on Monday, from 8:00 a. m. until 9:30 a. m. at the chapel. Lowell passed away Friday, May 27, 2005 at his home in Dickinson. Lowell was born September 18, 1911 on a farm 18 miles north of Gladstone, the son of Leonard and Theresa (Stadtler) Schiltz. He spent his boyhood years working on the farm. In the 1930?s Lowell attended and graduated from the Lincoln Flying School in Lincoln, Nebraska as an aircraft mechanic and welder. He returned to North Dakota and served as an assessor for the third District of Dunn County for a number of years. In 1939 Lowell ventured to Alaska to work for the Alaska-Juneau Gold Mine and in 1940 went to work in Palmer, Alaska as a mechanic, body and paint man. Lowell returned to North Dakota and married Rose Mischel on January 27, 1941, at St. Philips Church in Hirschville, North Dakota. The newlyweds made their home in Alaska until 1942 when they returned to North Dakota to farm north of Taylor. Lowell and Rose then purchased and operated a farm north of Gladstone until the fall of 1946 when they moved into Gladstone. In 1947 the Schiltz Garage was constructed, owned and operated by Lowell for the next 31 years. They moved to Dickinson in 1969. Lowell commuted to Gladstone until 1978 when he sold the garage. After retirement, Lowell was an avid lawnmower repairman for many friends. He enjoyed reading, storytelling, whistling and taking care of his yard. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Lowell was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus of Gladstone and Dickinson. Survivors include his wife, Rose of Dickinson; two sons: Lester (Grace ) Schiltz of Beulah, ND and Leon (Pat) Schiltz of Audubon, MN; two daughters: Darlene (Bruce) Gilmour of Queen Creek, AZ and Aleta (Ron) Hendricks of Dickinson; a brother, Paul Schiltz of Powell, WY; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Vincent Schiltz and a sister, Felicitas Hutmacher.
