Magdalene passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.
Magdalene Walter was born March 6, 1917 in rural Dunn County, the daughter of Stephen and Celestine (Urlacher) Walter. She grew up on the farm, attended country school and graduated from ND State School of Science in Wahpeton. Magdalene was united in marriage to John Knopik on October 17, 1938 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson and to this union, eleven children were born. The couple lived in Dickinson before they moved to Belfield in 1942 to raise their family. Magdalene was a seamstress for many years in Belfield. She and John were host parents for high school kids during the school months, for many years, before busing was used. She enjoyed baking and made wonderful caramel rolls. There was always room for one more at Magdalene’s dinner table, where food never ran out. She will be remembered for her kindness and smile that would light up the room. Magdalene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years and an honorary member of St. Bernard’s Women’s Guild.
Magdalene is survived by her children, Sally Murdy of Cambridge, MN, Mike (Janice) Knopik of Huson, MT, Angie Mercado of Dickinson, Trudy (Richard) Huschka of Fergus Falls, MN, Caroline (Larry) Ziegler of Bismarck, Geri Pomarleau of Mandan, Anthony (Jeani) Knopik of Bismarck, Phillip Knopik of Lino Lakes, MN, and Colette (Bill) Klewin of Dickinson; daughter-in-law, Emily Knopik; 29 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Mike Walter; sisters-in-law, Elenore Bren and Frances (Jerry) Meduna.
