Margaret passed away Monday, July 31, 2006 at St. Luke?s Home in Dickinson, ND surrounded by family and friends. Margaret Fichter was born May 28, 1912 to Joseph and Anna (Burger) Roll on the family farm near St. Placious, ND. She spent her early years on the farm but then moved to Taylor, ND with the rest of the family when her father died at an early age. It was in Taylor that Margaret attended grade school and later began working at the family grocery store where she met her future husband Christ Fichter. The two were later married on January 26, 1931 at St. Peter?s Catholic Church in Taylor, ND. Christ and Margaret made their home on a farm north of Taylor where they raised their family of seven children. Margaret was no stranger to hard work, whether it was gardening, milking cows or providing for her family through the depression. Her favorite task however, was cooking and the larger the meal the more she enjoyed preparing it, especially borscht soup and fried chicken. Margaret spent over 50 years on the farm until retiring to Richardton, ND after Christ passed away in 1984. It was here that she found time for her enjoyments of crocheting and quilting. She turned out finished products by the dozens to give away to family and friends or those in need. Several of her projects were sent all over the world, including Africa. Another one of her enjoyments was playing cards. In 1997, Margaret moved to Pioneer Haven where she spent seven years before moving into St. Luke?s Home. No matter where she lived or moved to Margaret was always quick to make friends. She was extremely proud of her family and it?s ever-growing size. She is survived by four sons, Joe (Francis) Fichter of New England, ND; Alex (Beatrice) Fichter of Kallispell, MT; Richard (Luella) Fichter of Dickinson, ND; Paul Fichter of Dickinson, ND; three daughters, Izie (George) Messmer of Deadwood, SD; Josie Heinert of Dickinson, ND; Agnes Kersich of Dickinson, ND; a brother, Nick Berger of Hebron, ND; a sister, Anna Hamann of Dixon, MT; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded by both of her parents; her husband Christ; an infant daughter, Mary Catherine; six brothers and three sisters.
