Marlene (Spotted Horse) Mahto, (Wooden Horse), 71, Dickinson, died on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at St. Josephs Hospital and Health Center after a long battle with cancer. Wake services will begin at 5 p. m. (CT), on Friday, January 12, 2007, at the Whiteshield Community Complex, Whiteshield, ND. Funeral services will be at 11 a. m. (CT), Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the Whiteshield Community Complex in Whiteshield, ND. Marlene was born in Elbow Woods ND to Philip Spotted Horse Sr. and Maime (White) on March 15, 1935. She attended elementary school in Elbow Woods and continued her education in Flandreau, SD. After graduating, she attended Haskell in Lawrence KS, where she earned her dormitory attendant degree. She then worked at the Wahpeton Indian School for a few years. She was married twice and had four children from her first union and two from her second. Marlene primarily worked as a custodian and was a very hard worker. She retired in 1994 due to medical reasons. She enjoyed her days by spending them with her grandchildren by taking them to the park. She loved them very much. She enjoyed her family and was very family oriented. She also enjoyed listening to music and playing cards. She is survived by: her sisters, Pearl Reed, New Town, ND and Marcella Spotted Horse, Wilton ND; her children, Jason Mahto (Bev Fettig), Nellie Mahto-Smith (John Stevens), both of Dickinson, Gary Newman and Gailyn Newman, both of Fargo, Donna Newman of Auburn, WA, and numerous nieces, nephews, along with many grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her parents; her son, Dexter Newman; two brothers Philip Spotted Horse Jr. and Wilson Spotted Horse, and one infant sister, Emerald Spotted Horse. Grandma, we will miss you very much, Love, Your Grandchildren.
