A funeral service for Marshall Bergerud, 84, of Killdeer, will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Killdeer, ND with Pastor Rob Favorite officiating. Burial will take place in Oakdale Cemetery. Lunch will follow at the Buckskin Bar in Killdeer.
Visitation for Marshall will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. , Tuesday, November 19th at Stevenson Funeral Home in Killdeer with Family Receiving Friends during this time.
Marshall passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Banner Gateway Medical Center in Mesa, AZ.
Marshall T. Bergerud was born on October 19, 1929 to Mildred (Jirikowic) and Tenney Bergerud in rural Killdeer. He attended Killdeer Public School graduating with honors in May 1947. His high school summers were spent spading Jesty’s garden for $0. 10 an hour; testing cream & eggs for Anderson’s grocery store; & working for Farmer’s Union. Following graduation he joined the United States Army serving at Fort Knox, Kentucky; Fort Ord, California and Fort Riley, Kansas. He was honorably discharged in May 1949. In September of 1949, he enrolled at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks where he spent the next four years as a member of the SAE fraternity being elected the “Eminent Archon” –that is, the President—of the fraternity his junior and senior years. Marshall graduated from UND in the spring of 1953 with a double major in history and accounting. His college summers were spent working for REA; Bang Construction; Goth Construction; and the construction of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Killdeer. The fall of 1953 saw him enroll at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in pursuit of a law degree. That same fall, he married Judith Chapman and a year later their son, Kimball Bergerud was born. Marshall graduated from Marquette with a law degree (J. D. ) in 1955 and they moved to San Francisco, California. One year later they would move to Killdeer where Marshall started an accounting and law office. In 1957, their daughter, Kristen Bergerud was born. The marriage ended in 1963. In 1967, he married Belle (Johnson) in Watford City. In 1980, they welcomed their son, Leif Bergerud. Marshall was a member of the Killdeer Town Criers, Lions Club, Elks Club 1137, State Bar Association and St. John’s Lutheran Church. He was Killdeer City Attorney for 35 years and the Dunn County States Attorney for 21 years as well.
Marshall is survived by his wife of 46 years, Belle; his daughter Kristen; sons Kimball (wife, Betsy Whitesell) and Leif (wife, Trista); two grandchildren—Ian Kubik and Sylvia Bergerud; nephew Ted Pletsch and nieces Karen Meyer and Elaine Pletsch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Tenney; and sister, Arlene Pletsch Bergerud.
