Martha passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, ND. Martha was born March 23, 1926 at the family homestead in rural Hebron, the daughter of Henry C. and Mary (Bender) Hartmann. As she grew up, she attended Wehri School District elementary school and Hebron High School graduating in 1944. Martha then went on to attend Jamestown College and then returned to Hebron to work as a bookkeeper for the Hebron Creamery. She later moved to Bismarck and worked for Quality Builders for many years as a bookkeeper. Due to her health, Martha had to retire in 1971. Fifty years ago, she lost her left arm due to cancer but never once thought of herself as handicapped. She had also been diagnosed with polio at a very young age and was so grateful to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, MN for all the wonderful care she received over the years to help her walk. Martha remained in Bismarck until she entered Marian Manor Healthcare Center in Glen Ullin. While in Bismarck, she was awarded the North Dakota Handicapped Person of the Year Award for her exemplary career and the Bismarck Volunteer of the Year Award for numerous hours of service. Martha enjoyed creating and teaching ceramics, card games, volunteering, and playing piano with her sister, Ann. She also took pleasure in traveling to many states with Ann as her companion. Martha is survived by her siblings, Ann Gietzen of Glen Ullin, Viola (Irving) Nolet of Dekalb, IL, Erwin (Josephine) Hartmann of Sturgis, SD; and a very special friend, Janine Haug of Bismarck who all have treasured memories of this brave and beloved woman. Numerous nieces and nephews are left with the lasting legacy of a cheerful aunt who overcame many obstacles and always had time for gin rummy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mary; brothers, Albert, Walter, George, Henry Jr. and infant Frederick Hartmann; and sisters, Hilda McCormick, Freida Kinnischtzke, Eleanor Vastag and Esther Anderson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital.
