Martin Richard Robert Harnisch was born on October 16, 1925 to Johannes and Frieda (Friedrich) Harnisch in Riedstadt, Germany. Growing up he attended school through the eighth grade. Martin worked on the family farm/orchard until he was drafted into the German army at the age of 17. He was captured by the allies in France and sent to the United States where he worked in the POW camps in Idaho and California. After the end of WWII, Martin returned to Germany. On May 15, 1948, he married Gertrude Teuchtler. The couple later fled from East Germany with their two young sons. Martin worked in West Germany for several years as a brick layer, saving enough money for passage to the United States. The family then immigrated to Hebron, ND with his parents where they joined Martin’s uncles on the family farm. Martin and Gertrude made their home on a farm NW of Hebron where he worked tirelessly raising cattle and grain crops. In 2000, they retired to Hebron and Martin continued to live there after Gertrude passed away in 2002. Martin later met Hanni Guttmann and since then they have been close companions. In 2014, the Marian Manor became home for Martin. Martin was a faithful member of St. John Church in Hebron and served on the parish council for many years. Martin was always a hard worker and he enjoyed playing cards and games with his friends. Martin is survived by his sons, Andrew (Michaela) Harnisch of Wanham AB, Canada, Eberhard (LaVone) Harnisch of Hebron, Rudolph (Michelle) Harnisch of Creston BC, Canada, daughter, Heidi (Darrel) Schulte of Hebron, ND; grandchildren, Johannes Harnisch, Theodore Schulte (Grace Wolbert), Laura Harnisch, Danielle Schulte, Wyatt Schulte, Richard Harnisch, Kyle Schulte, and Abbey Harnisch; brothers-in-law, Franz Teuchtler, Reinhold Wagner and their families of Riedstadt, Germany; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins of Teuchtler/Friedrich/Harnisch families in Germany; Hanni Guttmann of Hebron, and her family- daughter, Karin Writer of CO; grandson, Russell (Heather) Kieselbach of OH; granddaughter, Lindsay (Kevin) Ritter of CO; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Mae and Ace.
