Martin passed away Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson, surrounded by his family.

Martin Carl Kuhn was born May 10, 1920 on the family farm in rural Lefor, ND, the son of Jacob and Katie (Herf) Kuhn. He grew up and attended country school east of Lefor. As a young man Martin joined the (CCC’s) Civilian Conservation Corps, where he worked in California and later in Medora, ND. Martin was inducted into the United States Army in February of 1942. He served during World War II in the European Theater. Martin was Honorably Discharged on November 16, 1945. On June 25, 1947, Martin and Magdalen Herold were united in marriage and began farming. To this union five children were born: Calvin, Glenda, Darrell, Linda and Bruce. Together, the couple farmed and raised their family southwest of Lefor. After 55 years on the farm, Martin and Maggie moved into Dickinson and have made their home here since. Martin loved farming. He was a proud farmer and he loved the land. Being out on the land and walking through his pasture and grain fields always brought great joy to him. His second passion was dancing, especially polka dancing. He rarely missed an opportunity to go dancing on Saturday night and he very rarely came off the dance floor. Martin also enjoyed playing cards, driving the tractor and having dinner with his family. He also loved to spend time playing with and teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Martin was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, St. Joseph’s Verein, Knights of Columbus of Lefor, St. Anthony Club, F. O. E. Eagles Club, and the National Farmers Organization.

Martin is survived by his wife, Maggie; five children, Calvin (Kim) of Dickinson, Glenda Kuhn of Cody, WY, Darrell (Dorita) of Lefor, Linda (Levi) Krein of Bismarck, and Bruce (JoAnne) of Colorado Springs, CO; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Bayer of Sacramento, CA and Kathleen Wittinger, Columbia Heights, MN; two brothers-in-law, John Herold of Lefor, and Joe (Phyllis) Herold of Dickinson; and two sisters-in-law, Angie Nuss and Evelyn Herold both of Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Katie; one brother, Arnold (Helen); brother, Victor; infant twin siblings, Jacob and Katie; and one brother-in-law, Frank Bayer.

Memorials may be given to the Queen of Peace Catholic Church and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church of Lefor.
