Marty Benson

A funeral service for Marty Benson, 56, Killdeer will be 11:00 a. m. , Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, ND with Pastor Barry Zietz officiating. Burial will take place in the Spotted Bear-Benson Cemetery, Twin Buttes, ND. Visitation for Marty will be from 4:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. , Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Killdeer, ND with a prayer service being held at 7:00 p. m. Marty passed away Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Sanford Health in Bismarck, ND. Marty Benson, Werok Natka Siih “Strong Heart Bull”, was born March 20, 1960 to Frank Titus Benson and Olive (Sholaas) Spotted Bear-Benson. Marty was a member of the Knife Clan on his mother’s side and a “Child” of the Waterbuster Clan on his father’s side. He grew up and attended school in Twin Buttes and Halliday, graduating from Halliday High School in 1978. Marty was active in three sports during high school; football, basketball and track. He was the State Track Champion in 1977 and 1978 in the one mile race and in 1977 he was also the two mile State Champion. In 1978, his younger brother placed 2nd while Marty was 1st. He was chosen All Conference in football his junior year, which was Halliday’s first year of high school football and an All State Football Player his senior year. He was given a track and football scholarship to attend North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, ND. Marty returned to Twin Buttes and went to work for the Beulah Gas Plant. In August of 1991 he was involved in a serious car accident which left him paralyzed and in a coma. After three months he woke up and began a long journey with health issues. He always had a good, witty personality and shared his humor with the family. He was also an avid outdoorsman and liked boating, hunting, fishing and especially enjoyed spending time with his nephews and nieces. He spent the last 20 plus years at Hill Top Home of Comfort in Killdeer. Marty is survived by his sons, Cory Mohl of Bismarck, Shayne Alcon of New Town; daughters, Felicia Lincoln, Visalia, CA, Macy Iverson, Fargo; brothers, Lonnie (Diana) Spotted Bear, Kelly (DeeDee) Spotted Bear, Barry Benson; sisters, Marian (Myron) Spotted Bear Cook, Karen Lynch, Roberta (Dennis) Dahlen, Ivetta (David) Holding Eagle, Helen Zarfos, Rhonda (David) Schettler; foster brothers, Leland Beston, Jim Morsette; foster sisters, Julie Beston, April Cantrell, Kay Cantrell; three grandchildren, Calley Alcon, Ellyan Iverson, Kiriana Zavala and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Olive Benson; and sisters, G. Janet Spotted Bear Gunderson, Sandy Spotted Bear and Alyce Spotted Bear. The family suggest memorials be given to Hill Top Home of Comfort, 95 Hill Top Drive, Killdeer, ND 58640.
