Mary passed away peacefully, with her beloved husband Nick by her side, on Sunday, January 8, 2006 at St. Benedict?s Health Center in Dickinson, ND. Mary Barabash was born on June 6, 1917 in Mary, ND, a small township near Grassy Butte, the daughter of Dan and Polly (Kopichuk) Cerkoney. She attended school in Billings County and the National Youth Association training program. She then worked as a housekeeper for the Joe Okrup family in Killdeer, North Dakota. On November 12, 1940, she married Nick Barabash and moved to his farmstead in Stark County, where the two of them cared for Nick?s invalid mother for the next 17 years. In 1969, Mary and Nick sold their farm and retired in Belfield. They were active members of St. John?s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Belfield, where Mary spent many hours cleaning the church in preparation for Sunday services. Mary also worked for the Belfield Grade School as an aide. Mary?s devotion in life was her love of God and her family, always nurturing and caring for all. Her true love and talent was in the kitchen, where her dishes were mouth watering and welcomed by all, as well as her green thumb gardening, where her pickles and chokecherry jelly were always sought after. She will be truly missed by her family and friends.
