Funeral Services for Mary Carter are 10:00 a. m. , Monday, November 8, 2004 at the Ekalaka Bible Church in Ekalaka with Pastor Wallace Fox officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Camp Crook, South Dakota. Visitation will be Sunday, from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 p. m. at the Stevenson Funeral Home in Baker continuing on Monday one hour prior to service. Mary Jane Carter was born on January 28, 1917, the daughter of James and Florence (Parsons) Keaton in Nicut, West Virginia. She grew up and attended school there. Mary was a member of the Lonely Hearts Club while in West Virginia. She met Ethan Carter and exchanged 13 letters with him. After he completed shipping in the fall of 1937, Ethan drove to West Virginia and courted her for five days. They where united in marriage on October 18, 1937. They returned to Carter County where they made their home on the ranch in the Long Pines. In 1969 they retired and moved into Ekalaka where Mary has made her home since. Mary kept very busy with family, helping friends and neighbors and a hobby of making quilts which are scattered out all over the world. In her lifetime she made between four and five hundred quilts. She dearly loved and enjoyed her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary passed away on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 at the Dahl Memorial Nursing Home in Ekalaka. Survivors include two daughters, Jane Logan, Ekalaka and Dorothy Stieg, Baker; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ethan; four sisters, Iley Drake, Icey Monroe, Nellie Keaton and Dora Parker; three brothers, Harley, Everet and John Keaton; a son-in-law: Wilfred Stieg; and four great-grandchildren, Allison Rene Parks, Dustin Cheyene Parks, Ethan James Parks and Adam Scott Parks.
