Mary Catherine Moreland was born on July 28, 1928 to Ira and Maude Moreland in her parent’s farm home near Peyton, Colorado. At age nine, the family moved from the Colorado plains to the Rocky Mountains, first to Hartsel, CO and later to Lake George, CO. She received her education in one room school houses through grade eleven. On April 22, 1946 in Raton, NM Catherine married Hylan “Dutch” Coleman the absolute and total love of her life. They were the parents of two children, Sharon and Mitchell. During the first seventeen years of marriage they moved frequently; living wherever they found work. Many of the houses they lived in during this time did not have running water and were heated by wood burning stoves. Hard work and hard times never fazed Catherine. As they moved about, she found work in various places by taking in washing and ironing, working in the post office, or babysitting. In 1963, Catherine and Dutch found home when Dutch went to work as a ranch hand on the Wahl Ranch at Jefferson, CO where they worked until retirement in 1999. During this time, Catherine decided she wanted to get her high school diploma. At age forty-five, she began her senior year at South Park High School in Fairplay, CO and graduated with the class of 1974. Nothing brought Catherine more joy than caring for children. While living at Jefferson she opened “Luv and Care Daycare”. She treasured being “Grammy” to every one of the children she cared for. Catherine and Dutch also became foster parents and thought of those children as their own. In 2000, they bought a place at Canyon Creek, Montana where they lived until 2002 when health issues required them to leave the beautiful mountains Catherine so dearly loved and move closer to their daughter in North Dakota. In November 2011, both Catherine and Dutch entered St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson, ND due to his dementia and her increased disability caused by the stroke she suffered in 2002. Despite her physical limitations her mind remained sharp and her greatest desire was to be able to be there for Dutch for as long as he lived. Her wish was granted as she was by his side until he passed away on July 25, 2013. Catherine leaves behind her daughter, Shari (Ken) Krein of Richardton, ND; a special young lady Catherine referred to as her granddaughter, Kayla Mills of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters-in-law, Doris Coleman of Delta, CO, Twila Keller of Lamar, CO, Jean (Jack) Allen of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Gail (Gary) Gosage of Colorado Springs, CO, Othel Colburn of Sparta, MO and Basile Coleman, Elizabeth, CO; an extra special nephew, Walt Kendall of Jefferson, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
