Mary Ficek

Funeral Mass for Mary Ficek, 90, of Dickinson, ND, formerly of New England, ND, will be 10:00 a. m. , Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England with Father Biju Chitteth celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New England. Visitation for Mary will take place from 3:00 p. m. to 8:00 p. m. , Monday, February 15, 2016 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil Service being held at 7:00 p. m. Mary passed away Friday, February 12, 2016 at CHI St. Joseph’s Health in Dickinson. Mary Hushka was born May 15, 1925, the daughter of John and Pauline (Berger) Hushka. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school near the farm. Mary later worked as a nurse’s aide at St. Joseph’s Hospital and by good fortune she met Pete Ficek who was in the hospital due to a farm accident. The two were married on October 22, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. The couple spent three years on Pete’s family farm. In the fall of 1950, they moved to a farm west of New England. This is where the couple made their home farming and ranching and raised their family. Pete and Mary retired to Dickinson in 2011. Mary was an avid quilter. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the lucky recipients of her many beautiful quilts, which they will treasure forever. She loved to work in her garden, spending time working on quilting and embroidery, as well as cooking and baking for her family. Mary enjoyed attending as many of her grandchildren’s school functions as possible. Her faith was very important to Mary throughout her life. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the St. Mary’s Church Altar Guild. Mary is survived by her 11 children, Linda (Ken) Sickler of Brule, NE, Donna (Lonie) Rohr of Gladstone, ND, Colleen (Mike) Sondeland of Bowman, ND, “Darrell” Dean (Sharon) Ficek of Bismarck, ND, Marlene Simons of Southfield, MI, Rex (Brenda) Ficek of Brainerd, MN, Carla (Gary) Poeckes of Beulah, ND, Nadine (Bryan) Wentz of Dickinson, ND Joel (Jan) Ficek of Dickinson, ND, , Michele McHenry of Minot, ND, and Dion (Maripat) Ficek of Dickinson, ND; a brother, Floyd (Adeline) Hushka of Dickinson, ND; sisters, Isabelle “Betty” Wock of Whitehall, MT, Edith Norton of Dickinson, ND, Elaine Dobitz of Jamestown, ND, Polly (Gerald) Nault of Shelton, WA, and Alice Hushka of Dickinson, ND; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Pauline Hushka; husband, Pete; infant brother, John, brothers, John Jr. and Andrew; and a sister, Phyllis Markel.
