Mary Eileen Brandt was born June 30, 1919 at Hampden, ND, the daughter of Alfred B. and Marie (Antony) Brandt. In December of 1923, the family moved to Werner, ND. Mary attended school in Werner, graduating from Werner High School. She went on to attend Minot State University and earned a BA in Education, followed by graduate work at the University of Minnesota. Mary was a pioneer in vocational education in North Dakota and South Dakota. Mary spent one summer during World War II employed by Douglas Aircraft in California. On June 3, 1946, after Alfred B. Hansen returned home from a 4 1/2 year tour in the South Pacific, Mary and Alfred were married at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Fargo. The couple spent their lives on the ranch where Alfred was born near Werner, ND. Mary and Alfred were blessed with eight children, including two sets of twins. Mary and Alfred enjoyed attending various activities of their children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading, sewing and crafts, including denim quilts, crocheting afghans, needlepoint, and crewel embroidery of which her children and friends were recipients.

Mary is survived by her children: Dwight (Sharon) of Dunn Center, Dr. Eileen (Willard) Nickisch of St. Charles, MO, Bob (Rose) of Dickinson, Carla (Bill) Trotter of Grassy Butte, Marla (Al) Morrison and Fred, all of Cavalier; daughter-in-law, Sharon Hansen of Killdeer, ND; 15 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; daughter, Nona Rae; son, Douglas; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Hansen. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Home on the Range for Boys and Hill Top Home of Comfort.
