Mary passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at CHI St. Alexius Health Center in Carrington.
Mary Katherine Monroe was born on October 18, 1941 to Robert G Monroe Jr. and Clara (Hovden) Monroe, in Dickinson, North Dakota. Mary grew up on the family ranch and attended school in Killdeer where she graduated from High School in 1959.
After high school graduation Mary attended college at the University of Montana, and returned home to Killdeer to attend Dickinson State’s Teacher’s College where she met Louis Hurt Jr and they were married December 28, 1962 in Killdeer. After marriage Mary and Louis made their home in Belfield ND prior to moving back to Killdeer where she worked at Killdeer Drug and later FSA office. Mary graduated from Dickinson State’s Teacher’s College in 1974. She taught high school business class in Killdeer and later taught in Mandaree, ND.
Mary and Louis had 3 children, Louis Owen III, Robert James Hurt, and Patricia Ann. Mary and Louis made their home in and raised their family in the Killdeer, ND area.
Mary held a very special bond with her paternal grandmother Anna Monroe, from which Mary shared many fond memories with her children about her grandmother and made sure that they were taught Grandma Anna’s proper etiquette. Mary worked numerous jobs but one of her favorites was serving as the City Judge in Killdeer for 5 years. Mary enjoyed it when nephews, nieces and close friends’ kids would come to spend days and sometimes stay for a month or more at the ranch. A lot of life lessons were learned, and many fond memories were made for everyone involved. Mary enjoyed hosting holidays with family and friends, Christmas and Independence Day were her favorite times of year. She would have a house full of food and drinks for everyone that could come and celebrate. Having a dining room table full of people enjoying a good cup of coffee made Mary’s day. She also enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, and playing cards. She never missed out on a dance and loved having a good time. Mary took great pleasure in traveling, especially to places such as the Kentucky Derby & Nashville with Patty, Alaska with Louie and their longtime friends Bob & Jane Schettler, visiting their son Louie in Cour D’Alene ID, and over the road trucking with Louis. Mary never missed a horse race on TV, and the Bloodhorse magazine was always near by. She loved to have great debates with her brother- in-law David Warner on pedigrees and possible winners, and of course betting a few dollars on the horse race was always a must! You did not want to call her the day of the Kentucky Derby or stop by for your daily visit as you may be asked to be quiet.
After retiring, Mary and Louie moved to Bowdon, ND to be closer to her daughter and family. She loved to see the new baby calves in the spring, help with Christmas baking and lefse making. Mary never missed out on a friendly dispute and loved to talk about history, and current day world events.
Mary is survived by her husband, Louis Hurt Jr of Bowdon; daughter, Patty (Jon) Tebelius of Bowdon; sister, Dorothy Schmidt and Sisters-in-law Joy Hurt and Gloria Warner; brothers-in-law, Floyd (Muriel) Hurt, Alantson (Barbara) Hurt, Joe (Brenda) Hurt; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mary is proceeded in death by her parents, Robert G Jr and Clara Monroe; son, Louie Owen Hurt III; infant son, Robert James; In-laws Louis and Gladys (Owen) Hurt, sister-in-law , Angeline (Francis) Karel; brothers-in-law, Marvin Schmidt, Dale Hurt and David Warner; and nephews, David Warner Jr. and Dan Karel.
