MaryAnn passed away on Monday, March 5, 2012, at Fallon Medical Complex in Baker, MT. MaryAnn Witkowski was born June 13, 1938 in Beach N. D. She was the eldest daughter and second child of six born to John and Katherine (Piesik) Witkowski. MaryAnn and her five siblings grew up in Wibaux, MT and on the family farm south of Wibaux. While growing up she developed a passion for: cooking, baking, canning, gardening, dancing, playing cards and fishing. Those passions were later passed on to her children and grandchildren. She attended Wibaux County Schools and graduated in 1956. While attending high school she worked at the local theater. It was here she met Charles Nielsen. They were married September 27, 1956 and blessed with eight children; Karla, James, Monica, John, Tom, Tim, Kevin and Joette. They would later divorce and MaryAnn moved the family to Baker, MT. where she resided until her passing. While in Baker, she was able to enjoy her passion of card playing while working at the local bars. Her passions of cooking and baking were shared with the community while managing Wildwood Supper Club west of Baker, and working at The Talk of The Town and Gramma Sharon?s. During her off time, she would gather up the kids/grandkids and go fishing for the day, work in the garden, get busy in the kitchen or study cookbooks for the next best recipe. There was not a cookbook out there that intimidated her. By adding a pinch of this and a dash of that the recipe on the stove or in the oven became hers. The family favorite is her Sour Cream Fudge. When she had it cooking on the stove the smell sent her kids running outdoors but they all had an instinct to when it was off the stove because they ran just as fast to get back in and clean the leftovers from the pot. Those honored and grateful to have had God?s Cook in their lives are her children: Karla & (John) O?Connor, Baker, MT; James & (Tracy Rustad) Nielsen, Baker, MT; Monica & (Lon) LaCross, Baker, MT; John & (Denise Bakken) Nielsen, Glendive, MT; Thomas Nielsen & (Janean Gerhardt), Jordan, MT; Kevin & (Kim Bliss) Nielsen, New Llano, LA; Joette Nielsen-Milne, Baker, MT.
