A Funeral Mass for Mary (Hutzenbeler) Zacher, 93, of Belfield, will be 10:00 a. m. , Thursday, January 30, 2014 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Belfield with Father Bill Ruelle celebrating. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. Visitation for Mary will be 5:00 p. m. to 7:00 p. m. , Wednesday, January 29th at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Belfield with a Rosary and Vigil service being held at 7:00 p. m. Mary passed away Monday, January 27, 2014 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson. Mary (Hutzenbeler) Zacher was born in Milnor, North Dakota on October 27, 1920, the daughter of Martin & Bertha (Kooren) Borgman. As both of her parents came from Holland, they moved to land owned by the Holland Dakota Land Company west of South Heart. She attended grade school and high school in South Heart. When she was in high school, if a teacher in the grades was absent, she enjoyed teaching for the absent teacher so much, there was no question as to her choice of profession. She attended Dickinson State College, Minot State College, and Valley City State College. On December 29, 1941, she married Paul Hutzenbeler in the Lady of Lourdes Church in Gaylord. They lived on the farm south of Belfield for almost thirty years when Paul had a fatal tractor accident July 7, 1971. She taught in rural schools, one year in Belfield Public School and completed 34 years of teaching in South Heart School. She taught first and fourth grade in South Heart and touched the lives of many children. She felt it was a blessing and a privilege to teach children because the rewards were so great. She was an example of the motto, “To teach a child is to touch a life forever. ” Many children who had problems will remember she cared. We want to say “thank you” to the many young people who stopped to chat and to ask “remember me?” We want you to know the happiness you brought into her life. Mary retired after 34 years of teaching when she married Louis Zacher on September 1, 1984. She enjoyed substitute teaching in St. Bernard’s school in Belfield. Mary was never to busy to lend a helping hand and she did volunteer work helping the elderly on her block, whether they were sick, needed supplies or doctor appointments. She visited patients at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, was President of the Diabetic Support Group, managed monthly Senior Dances, was a member of the St. Anthony Club and the Sunset Center. She enjoyed dancing, singing, playing cards, collecting dolls, owls and trolls. Making things out of wood was a favorite pastime for Mary. She wrote poems for almost every occasion for family gatherings or special events. Mary is survived by her son, Martin (Nancy) Hutzenbeler of Belfield; daughters, Sandra (Thomas) Stephens of Belfield, Linda David of South Heart, Anita (Darwin) Bietz of Lincoln, NE; fourteen grandchildren: Lisa (Tim) Dworshak, Mitchell (Zelda) Hutzenbeler, Laura (Troy) Kraenzel, Corey (Deb) Hutzenbeler, Amanda (Tony) Valdez, Chelsey (Eli) Timoteo, Greg (Heather) Stephens, Rick (Tasha) Stephens, Jessica (Jeff) Beckman, Wanda (Tim) Hilton, Michael (Jeannie) Bietz, Frankie (Elta) Bietz, Jason (Alisha) David, Chris (Lynette) David; forty-five great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Borgman of Carson City, NV; Anita Borgman of Minot; brother-in-law, Louis Hutzenbiler of Anaconda, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands Paul and Louis, infant daughter, Shirley; son-in-law, William David; sister, Martha Hutzenbiler; two brothers, Corky and John Borgman; brother-in-law, Matt Hutzenbiler; and numerous other brother and sister-in-laws.
