Matilda Steier

A funeral Mass for Matilda Steier, 106, of Dickinson will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Todd Kreitinger celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Pius Catholic Cemetery in Schefield.


Visitation for Matilda will be from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil service being held at 7:00 p.m.


Matilda died Saturday Aug 2, 2014 at St. Benedicts Health Center, Dickinson surrounded by all of her family.


Matilda Huck, was born May 2, 1908 in Crown Butte, ND and was the youngest of nine children of George and Marian Kautzman Huck.


On February 18, 1930 she married Thomas Steier at St. Pius Catholic Church in Schefield, ND. They farmed at rural New England. Her husband died in 1952. In 1959 she moved to Richardton where she worked in the kitchen at the Assumption Abbey. Later she worked as a cook for the St. Mary’s school for the hot lunch program.


Matilda belonged to the Christian Mothers for over 50 years, the Royal Neighbors and the St. Pius Verein.


Matilda also did volunteer work for RSVP delivering Meals on Wheels, working at the museum and playing cards with the residents at the nursing home, well into her eighties. For many years she made the chicken soup for the fall church fair at St. Mary’s of Richardton. She was a self taught seamstress, did quilting, crocheting and also an avid card player, often playing for hours on end. After retirement she traveled extensively throughout the U. S. and made a trip to Germany.


Matilda is survived by her eight children: two sons Frank (Clara) of Dickinson and Raymond (Bonnie) of Blaine, MN; 6 daughters: Lorraine Meschke, Baker, MT, Marcelline (Robert) Stinchfield, Billings MT, Jeannette (Charles) Forster Richardton, ND, Donna Steier Coon Rapids, MN, Clara Steier (Bill Jorgensen) Lake Mary, FL, Mary Ann (Raymond) O’Donnell Glendive, MT, 25 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, son-in-law Donald Meschke, seven great-grandchildren, her parents, all of her brothers and sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.


The family thanks the special care givers Shari Schwindt, Bernie Krebs, Marian Ringwall and Randy Zeller of St Ben’s.


In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Matilda Steier Memorial Fund for the Education of Priests at Assumption Abbey, Richardton, ND, 58652 or to the St. Pius Cemetery Fun, c/o of Ann Wandler, 11416 50X St., Dickinson, ND 58601.
