Max Moseley

A funeral service for Max Moseley, 83, of Camp Crook, SD will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017 at the Camp Crook Community Center with Pastor Dave Moench officiating. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Camp Crook.


Visitation for Max will take place one hour prior to the service at the Camp Crook Community Center.


Max passed away Monday, May 22, 2017 at Dahl Memorial in Ekalaka, MT.


Max Wayne Moseley was born August 22, 1933 in Camp Crook, SD, the son of Thomas A. and Pansy Fay (Clark) Moseley. Max was the third child born to Tom and Pansy. He grew up and attended school in Camp Crook through the eighth grade. He then moved to Cody, WY with his Aunt Margaret Moseley and completed ninth grade. After finishing his schooling, he moved back to work on the family ranch. On March 1, 1955, Max was drafted into the US Army. He was assigned to an artillery division where he was 2nd gunner on a 105 Howitzer at Fort Polk, LA. After Max was honorably discharged on March 1, 1957, he returned to the family ranch. In 1964, he met Shirley Teppo, a fiery little schoolteacher, in Camp Crook. Max and Shirley were united in married on August 20, 1966 in Belle Fourche, SD. To this union, four children were born: Maxine, Shirrel “JoAnn”, Tracy and Hope. Together, Max and Shirley raised their family on the ranch. Max had a soft spot for animals and gently treated each creature he encountered. Max broke many broncs and always rode a horse that had a little buck to him. Max was raised when ranching and cowboying was tough. Plan A was always the “Hard Way.” He calved through springs hauling a calf puller on his horse as he rode through tough blizzards checking cows.


Max was a member of Harding County Stockgrowers and SD Stockgrowers. He was a past member of Harding County Weed Board and Harding County Planning and Zoning Committee. Max enjoyed spending time reading, watching sports, and finding fossils and arrowheads. Max enjoyed watching his grandkids’ sports activities.


Max was very intelligent and learned much by observing life around him. He watched Tom Ginsbach and his brothers build dams and move dirt. Back at the ranch he jumped on the crawler and built dikes, ditches and dams all over the place. Max was a natural engineer (or part beaver); he understood water, how it moved and spent much of his life controlling water to produce hay.


An unassuming man, Max preferred the quiet life. What pleased him most were a good walking horse, big windrow of alfalfa hay, and having all 4 girls home. Later in life, Max’s 8 grandchildren brought him joy and pleasure.

Max touched many lives with his kindness, tone deaf singing, and his gentle ways.


Max is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Maxine (Dean) Rasmussen of Camp Crook, SD, Shirrel (Chad) Moore, of Sioux Falls, SD, Tracy (Matt) Teigen of Camp Crook, SD, and Hope Moseley of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Colter (Sassy), Karissa, Taylor, Abby, Max, Madeline, Kasey, and Karlin; brother, Richard “Dick” Moseley of St. Petersburg, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Pansy Moseley; brother, Thomas “Tommy” Moseley; sister, Margaret Joan Baier; brother-in-law, Joe Baier; sister-in-law, Betsy Moseley; brother-in-law, Wesley Teppo; sister-in-law, Shirley Teppo; nephew, Vance Baier; and great-niece, Maxine Moseley Knodel.
