Maynard Wanner

A funeral Mass for Maynard V. Wanner, 83, of Dickinson, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 2, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dickinson with Father Keith Streifel celebrating. Burial will be in the St. Pius Cemetery, Scheffield.


Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 1 at Stevenson Funeral Home with a rosary service being held at 6:30 p.m.


Maynard passed away Friday, February 24, 2017 at St. Benedict’s Health Center in Dickinson.


Maynard V. Wanner was born December 13, 1933 on the family farm in Stark County, the son of Frank and Katherine (Schoch) Wanner. He grew up on the farm and attended St. Pius Grade School through the 8
th
grade. On June 23, 1959 Maynard and Monica Godlevsky were united in marriage at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson. To this union, three children were born, Mitchell, Myles and Mischelle.  For the next forty years, they farmed, ranched, ran a Grade A dairy operation-milking cows and raised their family.  Maynard counseled many young farmers through the years.  He was a self-taught man in mechanics, being able to repair farm implements and overhaul tractors.  When he retired in 1995, he started to restore old John Deere tractors.  He worked for Steffes Church Furniture for a short time also.  Maynard loved the outdoors and the ranch life.  He enjoyed breaking and training horses.  He trained his favorite horse “Nellie” for roping and ranch work and the neighbors would call on him to help with their cattle. Maynard also enjoyed square dancing, where he served as President of the Club. He liked to travel within the U.S. and Canada, making a special trip to Hawaii. He was also a member of the Wanner Baseball team in Scheffield, ND.  Maynard was a happy man who loved to tell jokes and joke with everyone.  He enjoyed reading and spending time with his family, especially time spent with his grandson, Kobe.


Maynard was active in his community and he had a strong Catholic faith.  He was a mass server while in school, later serving as an usher for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.  Maynard was a Dickinson Farmers Union Director for many years, a treasurer for New England Enterprises, a school board member of St. Pius School, and a member of the ND Atmospheric Resource Board for 45 years.


Maynard is survived by his wife, Monica, rural Dickinson; son, Mitchell Wanner, Dickinson; daughter, Mischelle (Jerry) Rebel, New England; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Bernedette (Joe) Reisenauer of Bismarck, Diane Hibl of Minot.  He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Myles; brothers, Arnold, Nicholas and Jerome Wanner; sister, Veronica Wanner; and brother-in-law, Otto Hibl.
