Michael passed away, due to a farm accident, Monday, June 10, 2013 at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND.
MICHAEL DEAN WEHRI was born January 7, 1994, the first child of Kristen and Dean Wehri. Mike has two younger sisters that admire and adore him, McKenzi Leigh (16) and Maci Anne (10). Mike was a mischievous, creative child from the start. He would spend many hours in his grandpa’s garage at the farm tinkering with his cousin and grandpa. He loved to take things apart to see how they work. Several times he would be found carrying stuff home from school only to take it apart later. Mike was greatly involved in the Mott Regent School. He was in band, choir, FFA, speech, drama, football, track, student council, school tech committee, and Olweus anti bullying committee. Twice he earned a state superior actor award. He also went to state several times in speech. He played both defensive end and center for the football team. Undersized, he was never afraid to take on the biggest player from the other team. Yet, he would never boast about any of his great talents. Mike entered college at NDSU in August 2012 to pursue a degree in Agronomy and Soil Science. His circle of friendship grew while at college. Friends would jokingly ask if there was anyone he did not know as he walked to class. Mike was involved in the Agronomy Club and Saddle and Sirloin. He received the Outstanding Freshman Award from S & S and was to be the new member co-chair this fall. He continued his love of speech competition while in college by becoming a speech judge. He recently volunteered to judge the local 4-H speech contest. Even though he did not live directly on a farm, farming was his great passion. Mike was constantly scouring farm magazines and the internet looking at the new machinery. He would regularly point out machinery lots as his football bus would drive by, and then provide anyone that would listen information on what he saw. Every year, he would find a new machine to get excited about. Mike’s lifelong goal was to someday own a farm of his own, and be able to read “Wehri Farms” on a truck door. He was able to fuel that desire the past four summers while working with Stan Blickensderfer. Mike would often come home at night, excited to tell what he learned during the day. Mike could not wait to go farming with Stan this spring. The field and tractor was Mike’s first stop on his way home from college. Mike’s hobbies included being with friends, hunting, fishing, playing guitar, listening to music, going to concerts and watching Pittsburg Penguins hockey. He waited for spring thaw so he could go fish the Cannonball River with his friends. The fall hunting trips became stories for the next year. He would spend hours playing guitar with his friends. Just the night before, he offered his music equipment to some young boys in Mott so that they could practice playing music. Mike was an ear or shoulder to anyone in need. He touched many lives and provided inspiration to all. His smile provided happiness to those around him. He was quick to greet others with a hug and a smile, and would always wave when passing another on the road. Michael was one of a kind; there will never be another like him. To us, he had many special things in life yet to complete. But to him, he leaves us with NO REGRETS. He passed tragically from life on June 10, 2013 doing what he dreamed…farming.
Michael is survived by his parents, Dean and Kristen Wehri of Mott; sisters, McKenzi Leigh and Maci Anne Wehri of Mott; grandparents, Doug and Judy Martin of Dickinson, and Carol Wehri of Hebron; great-grandparents, Wilbert and Ida Sailer of Hebron, Virginia Martin of Nampa, ID; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harvey Wehri; great-grandparents, Ben and Viola Martin, Adam and Pauline Gustin and Joseph and Barbara Wehri. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to a scholarship established in Michael’s name.
