Missy passed away May 3, 2022 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.
Michelle (Missy) Ann Martin was born December 23, 1958, in El Cajon, CA. She attended El Cajon School where she played in the marching band and performed with the drill team. After high school Missy worked at many jobs, including two years in the Peace Corps, and being a veterinarian’s assistant. Missy accepted Christ as her Saviour and endeavored to follow Him throughout her travels. In her early forty’s, she decided to return to school. She attended the University of Montana Missoula receiving her bachelor’s degree in 2007, with highest honors, in forensic anthropology. Upon graduation with the nation in the midst of recession, she decided to switch her focus. She moved to Reno, NV and finished her master’s degree in elementary education at University of Nevada Reno. She supported herself throughout her college years working as an internet service provider for Great Basin Internet Service out of Reno. After receiving her teaching certificate, Missy taught school in Fernley, Nevada and Holy Cross, Alaska where she experienced ice fishing, snow machines, all things salmon, blueberry picking, Native beading, sewing her own fur cap, fish ice cream, bear, moose, musk ox, and a buffalo cow sleeping on her sheltered front step.
Michelle went by many names throughout her life. To her high school friends, she was “Mike.” To her students and friends in Alaska, she was “Miss Annie.” To her students at Berg Elementary, she was “Miss Missy.” To her adoptive family she was “Missy,” “Aunt Missy,” or “Grandma Auntie Missy” depending on which generation was addressing her.
Missy loved animals especially horses, which she rode competitively, and cats! She also loved coffee, stating, “My brain doesn’t function until I’ve had my morning coffee.” Before becoming ill, Missy enjoyed walking, outdoors, in good weather, and inside the gym when early darkness and cold forced her to do so. Her hobbies included reading (among her favorites were Harry Potter and Tolkien), knitting, quilting and cross stich. She also enjoyed music playing the clarinet, guitar, flute and piano.
Michelle is survived by her mother Barbara Ann (Wolcutt) Martin, her brother Duane E. Martin, her sister René Ann Martin, and six children Menolly Michelle (Wilson) Wilcox, Amberina Melinda Wilson, Adriel Zacchaeus Martin Wilson, Elizabeth Merriam Babette Wilson, Kyle Robert Wilson, and Robert Windom Wilson III. With her adoptive family, Missy is survived by her sister Llora June Knight, 14 nieces and nephews, 27 great-nieces and nephews, one great-great- niece and her cat Charlie.
Her passing leaves a hole in many lives, and she will be greatly missed. She currently resides in her new mansion in Glory, prepared by her blessed Saviour. We’ll meet her there some day.
