Funeral Mass for Mildred Steffan, 89, of Dickinson, ND, will be 10:00 a. m. , Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be 1:00 p. m. to 9:00 p. m. , Monday, July 19, 2010, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 p. m. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, for one hour prior to the service at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson. Mildred passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010, surrounded by her family at St. Benedict?s Health Center in Dickinson. Mildred was born on July 20, 1920, to Frank and Mary (Tuhy) Filipi on the family farm. She grew up and attended country school in rural Stark County. Mildred married Charley Steffan on October 12, 1938, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dickinson. To this union, nine children were born: Bernadette, Bernard, Elsie, Shirley, Rita, Francis, Cyndee, Charles A. , and Millie. They began farming with his father northwest of New Hradec. The family later moved to a farm five miles west of Dickinson where they farmed and ranched. In 1997, they moved to a home on Patterson Lake Road. Due to failing health, they relocated to the campus of St. Benedict?s Health Care Center in 2004. Mildred enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, crocheting, and caring for her grandchildren. Her grandchildren have fond memories of spending time with grandma and grandpa on the farm, feasting on her kolaches and dill pickles. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, St. Ann?s Altar Society, Good Neighbors Homemakers Club, and also volunteered at St. Benedict?s Health Care Center. Mom was a gracious, patient, and kind person, who dedicated her last years to taking care of dad. Mildred is survived by her husband of almost 72 years, Charley; her children, Bernard (Clementine) Steffan, Bismarck, ND, Francis Steffan, Bend, OR, Charles A. (Annette) Steffan, Belfield, ND, Bernadette (Roger) Kiwimagi, Elsie (Joe) Ott, and Shirley (Clarion) Kubas, all of Dickinson, ND, Rita (Raymond) Richard, Belfield, ND, Cyndee (Bill) Kooistra, Salem, OR, and Millie (Rick) Steckler, Breckenridge, MN; 33 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ludwig (Tillie) Filipi and Steven (Rose) Filipi, both of Dickinson, ND, and August Filipi, Bismarck, ND; and one sister, Margaret (John) Eckert, St. Paul, MN. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter; one brother, Laudie Filipi; and one sister, Hattie Gerber. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
