Memorial Services for Mildred Mae Underdahl, 92, of Hebron, ND will be held 11:00 a.m., CDT, Monday July 10, 2017 at St. John Church, Hebron, ND with Pastor Gaylund Olson officiating. Burial will take place at 3:00 p.m., CDT in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
Mildred passed away Saturday June 3, 2017 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Nance and Howard Bower, Chandler, AZ.
Mildred Mae Underdahl was born May 2, 1925. She was the eldest daughter of Albert and Rose (Hoerauf) Schmalenberger of Hebron, ND. Mildred graduated from Hebron High School in 1943 and went on to attend Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND; graduating in 1945. She worked at Coca Cola Bottling Company in Fargo until they moved to Minneapolis. Mildred returned to Hebron; working as bookkeeper at the Ford Garage.
On July 8, 1947, Mildred Mae married Norbert Underdahl, the love of her life. Together they began their dairy production business that continued for 64 years until the end of 2011. Millie’s skills as bookkeeper were put to good use not only as chief accountant for the family business; but also working as bookkeeper for Draeb Law Firm, Draeb & Schwartz Law Firm, and Solem Law Firm until her recent retirement in May of 2015. Mildred truly enjoyed her work; making friends with many who passed her way.
Mildred was an active member of American Legion Auxiliary for 67 years; serving as president for many years. She assisted in establishing Veterans Day Programs at the school and participated by leading the Pledge of Allegiance and helping the students understand the true meaning of Veterans Day. She explained what the poppies symbolize and why they were being sold to help our fallen heroes who served our country in past wars. She held a deep place in her heart for this mission.
Millie was a member of St. Johns Church all her life. She was active in Church, Guild, and Vacation Bible School and as Liturgist through the years. Most recently she enjoyed attending services, listening to the music and sermons.
Mildred learned to sew from her mom and enjoyed sewing dresses for her sisters and daughters while teaching them to love sewing too. She enjoyed all sports and could get quite involved and vocal cheering for her Minnesota Vikings, Twins baseball and Timberwolves basketball. Through the years, she enjoyed going to local high school games with her Norby. In recent years, she watched TV sports, and especially enjoyed Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune and never forgot to watch Lawrence Welk.
Millie loved to attend family reunions to see how her four sisters and three brothers and their families had grown and what each was now doing in the world. She enjoyed traveling to visit family and staying with her daughters the past few years. She was forever grateful for their understanding and loving care.
Millie looked at each stage of her life as the next great adventure. She will forever be remembered and missed by friends and family alike.
Gifts and memorials to celebrate her life may be sent to St Johns UCC or American Legion Auxiliary Henry Biffert Post 100, both of Hebron, ND.
Mildred is survived by her daughters, Nance C (Howard) Bower and Patricia (Jerry) Peterson; son, John Underdahl; grandchildren, Terisina (Jerry) Hintz, Kevin (Amy) Bower, Noelle (Jason) Craver, Dyame (Joanie) Martin, and Katie Keith; great-grandchildren, Breece, Coty (Mariah) & Sean Hintz, Josh (Benny) Andres, Grace & Rose Bower, Regan & Everly Martin, Oliver & Edison Keith, Giuseppe Craver, and Jaxon Hintz; sisters, Verda Heupel, Betty (Phillip) Messer, Gladys (Florian) Woroniecki, and Joyce (Harold) Schatz; brothers, Jacob (Alice) Schmalenberger, Robert (Gloria) Schmalenberger, and Allan (Georgiann) Schmalenberger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert; parents, Albert and Rose Schmalenberger; daughter-in-law, Kely Underdahl; and brother-in-law, August Heupel.
