Funeral services for Muriel Hedelius, 86, of Beach, ND, will be 10:00 a. m. on Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the United Community Church in Beach with Reverend Warren Maxted officiating. Interment will follow in the Beach City Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00 p. m. to 6:00 p. m. on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at United Community Church in Beach. Muriel passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at St. Joseph?s Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson. Muriel Hedelius was born on December 14, 1923, in Sunderland, England, the daughter of Robert and Constance Kate (Lowrie) Fletcher. Muriel grew up in England where she attended school. Following school, she attended business school, then trained to be a Nanny and worked in a country nursery for children whose parents served in the armed forces. Muriel then trained and worked as a Fever Nurse for a year and returned to child care. In 1942, she joined the Royal Air Force, where she proudly served until her discharge in 1945. Muriel met Raymond Martin, and the two were married on September 7, 1945, in Wolsingham, England. Following their marriage, Muriel and Raymond immigrated to the United States on December 11, 1948, making their home in East Chicago, IN. To this union Pamela, Keith, David and Philip were born. In 1966, Muriel and Raymond divorced. With two young sons, Muriel left East Chicago and moved to Dickinson, ND, where she lived for a year before making her final move to Beach where she made her home until her death. She went to work for the Beach School System as secretary at the High School. This was a position she held for the next 24 years until her retirement in 1989. Muriel enjoyed her job, especially the students and teachers. In 1976, Muriel married Leonard Hedelius. Together they shared 18 years of marriage until his death in 1995. Muriel liked crossword puzzles, knitting, needlepoint, traveling throughout Europe, reading romantic suspense novels and playing cards, especially poker. She was also interested in genealogy and had traced her family back to the year 436. Muriel enjoyed the holidays with her family and was very proud of her Christmas Village. She looked forward to her outings and trips out in the country with Donnie. Muriel was proficient on the computer, which allowed her to communicate with her family and friends in England, France and South Africa. Survivors include her children: Pamela (Richard, Jr. ) Knopp, Sentinel Butte, ND, Keith (June) Martin, Hessville, IN, David (Marietta) Martin, Dickinson, ND, and Philip (Tanya) Martin, Dickinson, ND; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and her long-time friend, Donald Myers, Beach, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; and her brother, Robert ?Bobbie? Fletcher.
