Murray Melcher

Murray passed away July 28, 2005 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker. He was born January 16, 1913, the youngest child to Edward and Rhoda (Wilkes) Melcher of Elbow, Saskatchewan. Murray grew up and attended school in Elbow until he moved with his mother to Hastings, MN. It was here that He finished his schooling and began working on area farms. Murray eventually worked exclusively on thrashing crews and it was these migrating crews that led him out west to the Carlyle area. Here, at the age of 20, he started working for his eventual father-in-law, Oscar Keener on his sheep ranch. During this time Murray was also enlisted in the Civil Conservation Corps and did his training at Camp Needmore. Eventually, Murray started his own sheep ranch in the Carlyle area. On April 27, 1941, Murray married Pauline Keener in Baker, MT. The couple made their home on the sheep ranch where they welcomed their daughter Linda to the family. Shortly after her arrival, they converted the sheep ranch into one of the first Angus cattle ranches in the area. They made their home together on the ranch for the remainder of their lives. Murray truly enjoyed spending time visiting with family and friends. He always found time for a game of pool or a trip to a rodeo. He is survived by his Daughter Linda (Ralph) Rising of Carlyle, MT; one grandson Pete (Carol) Rising of Culbertson, MT; and two great-grandsons, Wyatt and Morgan Rising. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Pauline.
