Myron ?Jim? Spitzer, age 77 of Hebron, died Saturday, May 19, 2007, at the Richardton Healthcare Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at 10:00 Central Time at St. Ann?s Catholic Church in Hebron. Visitation will be held on Monday after 4:00 pm at the church with vigil services at 7:00 PM. Military Rites will be held in Hebron by the Henry Biffert Post # 100 of the American Legion. Burial will be held in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery rural Mandan. Jim was born January 31, 1930 on a farm in rural Baldwin the son of Laundina (Spitzer) Kemph. He was raised in Bismarck and attended Bismarck High and Bismarck State College before graduating from Bemidji State University with a teaching degree in social studies and physical education. He married Dolores Weinberger, August 21, 1954 at Mandan. Jim began his teaching career at Stirum, ND. In 1956 he moved to Tappen, where he assumed the athletic administrators duties as well as teaching, and coaching. In 1961 Jim accepted a teaching and coaching position in Hebron, ND. While his contributions to the teams and individual athletes in basketball, baseball and track were significant, it was football where Jim and the Brickmakers made their mark. His teams posted an impressive 24 consecutive game winning streak and two undefeated seasons, racking up five conference titles during his tenure as head coach. He was recognized several times in his educational career, as Coach of the Year and Driver Education Teacher of the Year, and was nominated to the North Dakota Football Coaches Hall of Fame, and inducted into the North Dakota Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame. He retired from teaching in 1990 after 29 years in the Hebron School District. Jim?s hobbies include hunting for trophy deer, fishing, gardening, and his beautiful array of flowers. Jim?s contributions to the Hebron community were many, from leading the drive to rebuild the Rec Complex in Hebron, to serving with the Lions for over 25 years. He was the Chairman of the Fall Festival for many years, as well as serving as President and Secretary of the Lions. Jim was a lifetime member of the Elk, and a 45 plus year member of the American Legion. The military played an important role in Jim?s life; he served in the US Air Force for three years and was a 28 year member of the North Dakota National Guard, and the United States Army Reserve. Jim was an instructor at the Army Engineering School in Ft. Belvoir, VA; at the US Army Command General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, KS; and at the University of Nevada- Reno. Jim?s military career ended in 1982 when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Those most grateful for having shared in his life are his wife of 53 years, Dolores, Hebron; four daughters: Colleen (Steve) Crowell, Gillette, WY; Karen Spitzer, LaCrosse, WI; Jimmie (Donovan) Johnson, Breckenridge, MN; and Kim (Kevin) Erickson, of Fargo. Jim also leaves seven granddaughters of whom he was so proud; Stephanie, Katie, Avri, Kelsey, Tara, Shauna, and Ashley, and finally one great grandson: Dino James. Jim was preceded in death by his mother.
